Casual Gameday Observations
#1
The NFL Redzone was a lot more entertaining than expected yesterday:
  • Drake Maye got his first NFL concussion and sat out a good chunk of the New England win. Hate to see it.
  • The NFL media can try like hell but don't tell me Caleb Williams is a good QB. He's the worst rookie starting QB by a mile. Odunze's talent is wasted with him.
  • At what point does the media start to admit that Cincinnati just isn't good?
  • Detroit looks like a juggernaut.
  • The Jets and Aaron Rodgers shit show continues....love it.
  • Some of the wins Minnesota got early (Houston, Green Bay, San Fran, Jets) don't have quite the shine anymore. I'll take the Ws for sure, but none of the those teams are powerhouses. Packers HC said he is very worried about Love's groin issue.
  • Kirk Cousins has ALL day to throw behind that offensive line, he's going to eat big time if they keep protecting him like that.
  • Baker Mayfield is coming back to earth: can play well but still makes dumb INTs. Same with Geno Smith. I think you can rehab QB talent, but only so far.
  • Anthony Richardson is bad. And he's bordering on Mr. Glass territory.
  • Not sure why they started Bryce Young again, but they did. Man that's a bad team in Carolina.
  • No running game in Dallas and Prescott looks very mediocre to below average. Yikes time in Big D.
  • Jayden Daniels looks big time....good kid as well.
  • (old man rant): the color commentating on these NFL games is beyond hyperbolic. Each team has at least 3 Hall of Famers....2 times a broadcast they've seen the 'best play they've ever seen'....this young man is 'about to take the league by storm'. Sigh. Rant over.

...and ha ha to this:

p.s. An even worse look at it. WTF was this kid thinking?

I thought Bo Nix looked really good, but that was against the Panthers.

Jayden Daniels struggled against the Bears for most of that game. Just couldn't find anyone open. That Bears defense is real. But Caleb Williams is exactly what I thought he'd be. Brilliant and boneheaded in equal measure.

Also watched a bit of the Texans Colts game. Texans barely won that game and the Colts were constantly in Stroud's face with Odeyingbo, Deforest Buckner and Kwity Paye. They also have the only defender selected ahead of Dallas Turner in Laiatu Latu, who comes in occasionally. Like Turner he's not starting, but that pass rush is better than I thought, and with Darrisaw out, we could struggle with that a bit.

Aaron Rodgers looks more and more done every week.

Agreed on all points. I'd add some smugness about Cincy/Burrow, as he was the Kirko-haters "look what HE can do behind a bad line!" counterpoint, but hissed when Cincy's defense was brought up...which, at the time, was far superior to ours.

I've thought Burrow was wildly overhyped, still do. I think most of that bunch of "kids" (showing my middle age, here) that got $50Million+ per season were and are overhyped, possibly excepting Mahomes...and actually, I'll throw him on the pile as well. He's doing very well in a very good system with a very good coach who's keeping some important pieces on the roster.

It takes a fuggin' TEAM.

On that note, I wonder if the Vikings' issues aren't slightly related to a lack of team personality; we don't really have an overall team persona right now.
Are we bruisers? Chess masters? Insane athletes? Cocky playmakers?

A pretty good team that's likely to sneak in with a wild card again this season, and figure out their identity when JJM joins in?
LET'S WREAK SOME FUGGIN' HAVOK, VIKINGS!!! SKOL!!!

Y'all didnt touch on yesterdays biggest news...

Cleveland over The Ravens
Just the latest example of "on any given Sunday" - especially division games.

Love to see Dallas struggle in mediocrity, I think the 49'ers will be much more of a force once CJM is back.
Detroit it is best team in NFC - there, I finally said it in this lifetime lol
Colts D will be pesky, Vikings better be ready or it'll get ugly on SNF.
Bears are asking Caleb to throw way too much, I dont like how they are curating the kid. Eberflus has very dirty and bloody hands.

Agree. Outside of JJM who is only 21, if there were another QB who could've benefitted from a year on the bench, it was Caleb Williams. He's dangerous as hell, but he's playing exactly the way he did at USC. That doesn't typically work in the NFL. A year studying the offense, progressions, the NFL game and how to play from the pocket, could've served him well. Not that I'm sad they didn't give him this.   Cool

I don't watch many games other then the Viking games but here are some random thoughts.

I enjoy seeing Dallas struggle especially after giving Prescott big money.
I enjoy seeing the Jets continue a downward slide and enjoy seeing Rodgers losing the match with father time.
What has happened to Dallas Turner, last time I saw him he was on the side of a milk container as a missing person
I do not stress out seeing our kicker lining up for a field goal, so far Mr. Automatic

Bo Nix could qualify.  But Caleb is way overhyped.  The whole "He's Mahomes!" is just bullshit.  Just because you run around a lot and make a terrible incomplete pass doesn't make you the next Mahomes.

Quote:At what point does the media start to admit that Cincinnati just isn't good?

The issue there has always been cheap ownership.  They are never going to surround Burrow with much or hire a top level coach.  They are the only northern NFL team without an indoor practice facility.

Quote:Detroit looks like a juggernaut.

Happy for their long-suffering fans though I find Dan Campbell really obnoxious.   They are an example of a front office building a team the right way- from the inside out and drafting well.

Quote:The Jets and Aaron Rodgers shit show continues....love it.

Aaron's been washed for like 3 years but the Jets are another team with a mega-stupid owner who believes his own bullshit.

Quote:Some of the wins Minnesota got early (Houston, Green Bay, San Fran, Jets) don't have quite the shine anymore. I'll take the Ws for sure, but none of the those teams are powerhouses. Packers HC said he is very worried about Love's groin issue.

We had a hot start but we're coming back to reality.  The reality that Sam Darnold isn't on his 4th team because he's some undiscovered superstar.  The reality that KOC motivates and slaps backs but his in-game stuff doesn't cut it and hasn't for the entire 3 year run.  Fans can kid themselves all they want about whatever but when the rah-rah wears off it's up to talent and tactics and we are not elite at either right now.

Quote:Kirk Cousins has ALL day to throw behind that offensive line, he's going to eat big time if they keep protecting him like that.

I was never a huge Kirko fan but I'm kinda rooting for the guy now.  He's at the tail end of his career and he's gotten a lot better at stepping up in some of the critical moments.  And he always gives 100% effort.

Quote:Baker Mayfield is coming back to earth: can play well but still makes dumb INTs. Same with Geno Smith. I think you can rehab QB talent, but only so far.

Yeah well losing two star receivers last week doesn't exactly help.

Quote:Anthony Richardson is bad. And he's bordering on Mr. Glass territory.

I didn't understand the hype when he was drafted.  You look at his college tape, great athlete, terrible qb.  Colleges can get away with a guy who mostly runs and can't pass, but NFL teams cannot.  Maybe they are going to start to learn this lesson after so many busts.

Quote:Not sure why they started Bryce Young again, but they did. Man that's a bad team in Carolina.

Dalton got injured in a car accident.  Another team with terrible ownership - a billionaire who loves the smell of his own farts and thinks the rest of the world should too, lol.

Quote:No running game in Dallas and Prescott looks very mediocre to below average. Yikes time in Big D.

Jerry Jones doesn't have a clue.  Another bad owner.  Are you seeing the pattern here?  Dak is terrible he gets under pressure and throws checkdowns for nothing or ill advised picks, he can't run the same since the shattered ankle, the rest of the offensive talent has declined, and Mike Zimmer is just over the hill and lost his fastball.  Maybe they'll clean house after the season so 90 year old Jerry can try try again.  Haven't been contenders since he fired Jimmy Johnson 30 years ago lol.

Quote:Jayden Daniels looks big time....good kid as well.

I feel like there's a bit of luck involved here, yesterday being an example, and it may start to run out.  But I agree he's been the best of the rookie qb class.  Wish we could have seen JJM in action this year.  Oh well, typical Viking shit.  It never rains, it pours.

Quote:(old man rant): the color commentating on these NFL games is beyond hyperbolic. Each team has at least 3 Hall of Famers....2 times a broadcast they've seen the 'best play they've ever seen'....this young man is 'about to take the league by storm'. Sigh. Rant over.

The NFL hype machine never sleeps.  Did you hear, the Rams are "Back Baby!".  Yeah all it took was some ref shenanigans on a Thursday home game.  Isn't it exciting, oh can we stand it?!
