Let's say the Carolina Panthers turn out to be the worst team....

...do they draft a QB with that top pick next Spring? Obviously, if they are the worst team that means Young has another subpar season. Not sure how they wouldn't IMO, but it is admitting failure pretty quick on a guy the current regime drafted. Can't place blame elsewhere.

The sooner the mistake is admitted to, the sooner you can move on from it. They would be fools to not be looking QB and a veteran bridge if they dont see improvement this season.

This is why i dont like throwing rookies in early, it likely does more mental damage if they get benched amd them have to sit for a season, than if you just bring them along slowly.

What?

Who cares about blame?  Bad draft picks happen for every single regime.  What should get you fired is keeping a hopeless option for seasons wasting years of your owners and fans short lives.  Furthermore, you aren't limited to only having one option at the most important position in all of sports.  Having multiple options is infinitely better than having one (not good) prospect.

The opposite scenario to your scenario is currently playing out as we speak.  The Giants fandom is currently in a literal meltdown, one game into the season, because their regime doubled down on Danny Dimes, a guy they knew wasn't that good after paying him a moderately large amount of money.  This past draft, they had the option to take one of three different QBs.  They are currently on a path of no hope, they could have drafted one and been on a path of hope.  There's no amount of WRs that are going to drag Danny Dimes to a SB.

Dude, just because its logical doesn't mean its going to happen, lol. Its why I asked the question. Danny Dimes is a different situation, they resigned him. Young would still be on his rookie contract. I'm asking if an organization that took a QB #1 overall in the Draft in 2023 would be already willing to throw in the towel by drafting another just 2 years later with the #1 overall pick. Because in theory, they could wait another year and most probably still draft extremely high to see what the 2026 Draft class would be like. Jones was drafted in 2019.

Not sure why the dramatic response, but yeah.....NFL organizations care about blame. Dimes is for sure a cautionary tale, but different not an apples for apples comparison.

I think they are more apt to blame the coach, OC, etc. They are still giving the Bears draft picks for the trade-up. I believe its the 2025 2nd? Anyway, tough to admit failure on that kind of level. Had it been a simple pick at where you were, then they'd be much more likely to move on.

100% they'd be drafting QB. Like what Chicago just did with Williams and Fields, only Young has a bit less experience and seemingly a lot less talent than Fields.

I assume that like Chicago they'd trade Young to get him out of the locker room, and as a nicety to the player.

Unless Young shows marked improvement I don't see what other choice Carolina has. They just hired a new coach and it's unlikely he'll be shown the door after just one season. So that means it's either GM, QB, or both heads that are gonna roll.

Any rookie they'd draft will be coming into a lousy situation though, that's for sure. I just checked and as of today, Carolina has the 19th most cap space available in 2025. Much less space than I'd have a guessed for a team with a roster that bad.

If they did decide to move on in 2025, and if Darnold continues to show well. Would he be willing to go to that dumpster fire? The lure of starting QB money is strong. But is it that strong?
A lot of If's

IF they have a shot at a top qb in 25? After Young struggles 2 years in a row?

Yah, they gotta cut bait.

I know you get fixated on having only one QB at a time, but if you’re sitting at the #1 pick, because your previous #1 pick hasn’t elevated your team beyond being the worst team in the league, you 100% go get a different option, and you probably fire the coach and GM before they get a chance to pick, you go get a better head coach, get the best QB in the draft, and let them develop both of them.

I’m all for stability and giving guys time, but being the worst team in the league is hard to do, and doing it 2 years in a row is almost impossible without massive incompetency.

I thought of that too, but I think the Panthers taking Darnold back would be the ultimate admission of failure. Don't see that happening. I think if Darnold goes on to have a solid season the Raiders will be the team to come calling.
