Vikings sign Rypien, waive Hall

Wow...

A surprise: the Vikings are signing QB Brett Rypien and waiving Jaren Hall. Another veteran behind Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens.

I did not see that coming. I thought Jaren Hall acquitted himself well in the past two pre-season games. I assume if he clears waivers, he will be signed to the PS and they will cut someone else at the bottom?

Maybe Hall's injury precluded him from being available (this is probably it 99%)....OR....**cough** ....he's just not very good.

Here's what I saw from him this preseason: a weak armed, slightly late to the spot passer. I see very little upside with Hall. But Rypien? Whatever, its the #3 QB.

Can probably get the some Bears intel from Rypien. I like that our QB3 has some experience in a similar offense (Rams in 2023), but it looked to me like Hall had turned a corner. Maybe this is more about Hall's injury. I guess it's also possible that if he clears waivers we can put him on the PS.

...wow...?!

I've always kinda liked Rypien, because he reminds me of his Uncle, who made me think of a more-successful Joe Kapp: tough, more determined than flashy, will absolutely kill himself to get the yards needed despite lacking elite talent.

I thought Hall looked a lot better in recent action, but that was against 'scrubs', and he's got an injury, so...obviously, I defer to the team's wisdom.
STRETCH RUN, VIKINGS...LET'S END THIS SEASON WITH BANGS!

I guess the only way this makes sense if Hall’s leg injury is much more serious than anticipated and they need to get a 3rd guy on the roster. I don’t know much about Rypien but his stats don’t look good and his pff grade isn’t good, so I can’t imagine that they think they are upgrading here. Was there not any way to put Rypien on the practice squad?

After the initial shock, I kinda get why Kwesi is gambling here.

1. They obviously like Brett Rypien

2. If a team claims Jaren Hall, they HAVE to place him on their 53

3. Teams already set their 53 and practice squads. Do you want to reshuffle for Jaren Hall?

4. KOC really played up the Hall injury vs Eagles. You want to burn a 53 spot on an injured player?

5. If (when?) Hall goes unclaimed, they can put him on the PS and protect him from being poached all season (teams can protect up to 4 players on PS per week)

I don’t agree with the gamble. But I can see the calculated risk for Kwesi.

I don't really understand how this is a "gamble".  Rypien is an older shitty QB.  He's everything that people dislike about Hall, but with less potential.  It's all the risk and none of the rewards.

What evidence is there that they like Rypien?  Doesn't seem so obvious.  It feels like a lot of people out there are just making snap judgements here based on Rypian in, Hall out and saying rationalizations.  I don't know how us in the cheap seats can differentiate between the team liking Rypien more than Hall and Hall being hurt and needing to get a replacement.

We save like a mil against the cap by doing this too I believe. Maybe Zygi needs a new sports car.
