I like what we're doing
#1
As a Cub fan in addition to my suffering years as a Vikes fan, I like when an organization that hasn't seen success sets out in a different direction.  I define success as winning the whole thing.   It was clear that resigning Cousins was not going to get us over the bump.  There was still a significant gap between ourselves and the top teams.  Our defense would have been lit up against any formidable playoff opponent.

Flores did a magnificent job mixing and matching to put a competitive D on the field.  But good QB's were always going to pick that D apart.  Our Run Game simply was not up to par even with a healthy Cousins providing more balance and threats to get the defense out of the box.

Moving on from Cousins allows us to improve at every position but QB, and we're already seeing the windfall from doing so, even with $28MM in sunk cost.  Now, you have a place to work from in the draft that I believe gets you to the QB you need.  I really am high on McCarthy as a guy you can bring in without having to bankrupt your future and can give a year or two to grow, all while staying semi-competitive.  You put a staunch defense in place and an offense with all of our weapons guided by a head coach that should be able to coach up Darnold, you may sneakily be a fringe playoff team this year.  Then next year, you open the floodgates and build off that cheap rookie contract.

Is it a sure thing?  Most decidedly not, but I do think it puts you in a better situation to possibly be a real factor down the line, unlike the charade that was the last couple of seasons where we pretended we had any chance of having a say come playoff time.

The Achilles Heel to this entire "plan" is the rookie QB. JJM seems to be rising while Maye seems to be falling.
KAM has put himself at the mercy of the draft. If this was truly the plan all along then why trade for Dobbs last year? Once Kirk went down, along with JJ, if they were dead set on taking a QB in the 2024 Draft then making moves to win games was pretty short-sighted.
The fact they did trade for Dobbs and did win a few more games tells me this was not the plan all along and we're officially making moves on the fly. Which is fine but it's very risky.
Half this board is saying move way up, the other half is saying take whoever at 11. What if no QB we want is there at 11? Then what

If Minnesota can get a guy they really want in this Draft, yes.....its a plan where things are falling into place.

For a bunch of reasons, this is the first season where KAM/KOC can put their mark on the players out there.

I hope they can land the QB that'll work. Both of their jobs depend on it.

I like most of their signings this early in the new calendar year.

This is a deep draft of QB prospects.  Its likely at this point that Penix and Nix will both be available at 11. They both have NFL caliber  talents

KAM and KOC may ultimately fail to deliver a contender, who knows? But i can guarantee there is no panic in that room.

That's always the potential Achilles heel, right? I think you have a shot with three legit prospects after the top 3, and that we're not far away from being able to "guarantee" that we can get one of them with a relatively cheap trade up.  I'm not sure of the trade chart, but you can trade with either ATL or LAC to move up without mortgaging too much future.  Then it becomes the age-old dilemma of which one to pick, because it's likely 2 out of the 3 will bust out.  lol  But, I like the odds and cost at getting a QB that will play and be successful in the league for years sitting where we're at.  I love McCarthy and giving him a couple of years to develop, but if Maye drops, grab him in a heartbeat.  I think that concerns about him are more smoke than anything else.

You have to have backup plans. They had to free up money and move on. We'll see what happens. I'm just glad it's over and done with

You have to empty a cupboard completely out before you can start refilling it with new and fresh stuff...IMO
