I still don't see a better option than to give him another 2 year extension, draft his presumed successor, and hopefully cap Cousins' time as a Viking with a handoff to the next great purple QB and have the learning behind Kirk be a huge benefit....

I dont think there will be a better option.

But if ATL offers him a 3 year guarantee? Or if missus Kirko and the kids want to be with meemaw and pawpaw?

We're out

Kirk is about guarantees and guaranteed money. It's easy just to say "sign him to a two year deal and draft his successor" but we've been saying that for three years now and we aren't in a great position to draft one of the top guys this year.

Also, don't forget...Geoff reported Kirk has no interest in being a bridge quarterback and if the Vikings intention was to make him one (by drafting a successor), that he'd make them pay for it by guaranteeing a 3rd year. He wants this to be "his team" and thinks he's earned that right. It's going to be a very complex negotiation to get him to stay in Minnesota IMO..

He loses an awful lot of leverage if ATL backs down or goes with Fields.

MAYBE Payton and the Bronco's.

But yah, its about the structure and guarantees for sure - and mrs Kirko.

I didn't see Geoff's report on Kirk's interest or lack thereof in becoming a bridge QB. That said, Kirk is smart enough to know that this is the stage of his career where every contract he signs, he will essentially be looked at as a bridge QB. At most, he has 4-5 more years left in the league if everything goes perfectly. Long term guaranteed deals at his age aren't in the offing. My guess is 2 year guarantee w/a "possible" 3rd year non-guaranteed option.

For all the talk about Kirk's mercenary business acumen, I'd suggest keeping one thing in mind:

he could have arranged for his own trade, or previous contract run-off, and gone to SF or similar...behind a MUCH BETTER LINE.

Think about that for a second: he's one of the most battered QBs, year after year, NEVER throws his line under the bus to the media/fans, and could honestly get the same or better money just by making himself available, something he hasn't opted to do since 2018. He took countless hits, mostly while answering to a toxic coach, and has a bipolar fan base that's bitched about his pay since the rumors of his first contract got out.

He stayed, and all his dealings were in the office, not in the "court of public opinion".

Yeah, he's made a serious stack of money and his market value has him worth a chunk more right now...but, he's actually shown a ton of character towards our team, much with considerable and very real pain.

I think all those leaks to Pauline about their Fields interest are strategic.

Cousins likely wants more than both Minnesota and Atlanta are currently offering. He's using Atlanta against us and Atlanta is using Fields against Cousins. Just a little reminder to him that they have another option if he doesn't sign.
