Panthers Fire GM Dave Gettlemen
#1
Panthers fired GM Dave Gettleman.
To call this move shocking would be an understatement. The Panthers did suffer through a disappointing 6-10 season in 2016, but they had been to the playoffs Gettleman's other three years in charge including a Super Bowl berth in 2015. Gettleman is also a respected talent evaluator who drafted well during his time in Carolina. All of that suggests something behind the scenes prompted this move. It is worth noting star TE Greg Olsen has thrown around the idea of a holdout, LB Thomas Davis is entering his contract year, and Gettleman did not handle the departures of either Steve Smith or Josh Norman particularly well. Brandon Beane, who likely would have been the top in-house replacement, accepted the Bills' GM job in May.

I'd say drafting McCaffrey and following it up with Samuel, who is pretty much the same player, also had something to do with it...

Gettleman's firing is a big surprise to me.  I can't blame him for taking McCaffrey and Samuel.  I think they are both gonna be good.
I think the smart play would have been to trade Cam.

Maybe Richardson just realized that Gettleman gave $55M to Matt Kalil??

So Derek Anderson or Joe Webb could start? Or a raw rookie?

I'm hearing talk locally that Gettleman REALLY pissed off Richardson somehow. Supposedly has very poor "people" skills.

Couldn't be based on results, he has 3 times as many playoff wins as Spielman in 1/3 the time, and I keep hearing how great RS is, so Gettleman must be considered elite.

Very bizzare timing. Good luck trying to get a drcent guy for THAT job, now.

Oh.  I don't mean Gettleman should have traded him last week.  I just meant he might have done better with a different guy to build around.  Kind of reminds me of the AP-featured Power Offense Vikes, in a way.
