If Fields or Love were 3rd round picks the teams would already have moved on or be planning to.   It's mostly the sunk cost fallacy keeping them around, especially in Fields case.  If genuine progress isn't there then you are stuck making excuses and telling stories while the clock ticks.

QBs are badly over drafted these days--the QB hype on social and other media is silly at times.  Outside of Trevor Lawrence, the next 4 guys in that draft would have gone in the 2nd-4th rounds 20 years ago.

Teams are stuck paying 1st round cash for middle round talent, and figuring how to face the embarrassment of having to rip the bandaid off and move on.

So yeah Love *could* develop into some mid-tier NFL QB but that's probably the low % ceiling.  There is no buzz here in Wisconsin about him, including in the Packers front office.  Although JT O'Sullivan seems to like him so there is that.
There is no "buzz" like there was with Rodgers and Favre, but he was Gutnekunst's first pick as GM and I don't think they'll move on that quickly.  Love isn't playing well, but in all their games this year he has a couple throws that make you think he can be a big time QB, but then he'll have some inconsistent throws, accuracy, and decision making. Look at this last game, that throw as he was getting sacked that he sidearmed for a completion was a great play and there were a couple deep throws that the WRs didn't do him any favors.

From what I've heard in post game interviews, he's a mature guy, accountable, and displays leadership qualities.  There is enough there that I "think" the Packers "think" he can be a solid QB with the right players around him.

Now this isn't me defending him, but despite their 2-5 record I think GB will give him at least one more season to see if he can continue to grow.  Dude has like 8 starts.

That said, I don't see an elite QB when I watch him.  I think he has enough warts that he could settle in as a Daniel Jones or mid tier QB if he can iron out some weaknesses but that's fine if that happens.  Packers ain't winning anything with a QB like that.

I'm not sure your take is much different than mine, but I'm pretty sure Green Bay will be drafting a QB with a top ten pick next spring.
I've said more than once that Love is a backup and unlikely to ever be more. He of course can prove me wrong but I won't bet on it happening.

Of course.

I thought they'd at least give him one more year. But there are two things working against Love. The fact that he had two seasons of development and still doesn't look very good. And the fact that the Packers will very likely have a high pick in a QB-heavy draft.

how much improvement would you expect to see in year 2 though,  knowing that the sophomore slump seems to be hardest on QBs as teams get all offseason to find their flaws and develop ways to expose them.  Even if they didnt plan on moving off Love,  they would be stupid a shit not to grab another QB in this coming draft.  Hell regardless of how good Hall looks or if Kirk is coming back or not,  I will be pissed if we dont grab one of the top 5 QBs coming up.  I think we've got QB2 covered with Mullins and now Dobbs,  but we need to find that future #1 and if we happen to improve QB2 in the process,  win win.

That's just it though. This is Love's 3rd season. He had two years of development before he was asked to start. Considering that, you would expect more from him than he's shown this year.

I didn't think so before Sunday's game--he's done some good things. But the Packers could very well move on.

I thought he would be better,  but as much as I agree with seasoning a rookie behind a veteran for at least the first half of a season,  I think there are some things you only learn on the field with live bullets and so I wouldnt be to tough on him,  but I still say any team that doesnt have a young franchise guy at QB,  drafting in the top 1/2 of this draft,  needs to be looking hard at grabbing one this year,  there is some good talent likely coming out.

Just like with Purdy last year,   I will have the same thoughts with Hall if he looks the role,  I dont trust 1 year phenoms, especially at QB,  keep that cupboard full of prospects imo.

Is love a free agent or one year added?  May be worth keeping an eye on.

His option was picked up with a raise through 2024.
