Either they prefer Udoh over Lowe or no team was giving up a pick for Udoh.
I don't know quite how it works but Udoh deals is one where only a portion of his salary is counted towards the cap unless he is released or traded.  So, Udoh is basically guaranteed a roster spot.
Yep, I read that too.  I think we save like 2 mil in cap space if Udon is on the roster but would take his full cap number if we cut him.

I think like some others pointed out, this is probably a versatility thing with Udoh being able to play more positions as a backup.  Lowe is still a long shot to develop and we got a 6th in return.

Not a bad move by any means.  With Darrisaw on the roster, Lowe doesn't have a position where he could start immediately and we have Brandel, Udoh, and others to backup at LT, RT, and OG.

Udoh was awful this pre-season, against non-starters too.

Somehow he doesnt do too bad in spot/emergency duty in the regular season. I'm ok with him in that role.
I think the bottom line is versatility. Both Udoh and Brandel have played both left tackle, right tackle and both guard spots as well. I think Lowe was LT only. This allows the Vikings to keep fewer OLs since they may want to go over budget elsewhere, like at WR.
If we have to play Udoh at LT or either guard spot we are done.  He has been pedestrian the last couple of years and really thought he would have been cut last season.  I think Lowe has more upside than Udoh and they got rid of the wrong tackle.
You might be right about the upside, but let's not forget that Udoh played well in the two games he started last year against NFL starters. He graded 76.8 in pass pro. Lowe did what he did against many players who will not even be in the NFL in two days. I mean bitch if you want, but this seems a little silly.

I agree, we drafted Lowe 2 years ago in the 6th before we were 100% sure at the Tackle position and backups.  I think we are really solid at Tackle.  It is the Guard position I am most concerned about and I hope we pounce when cuts happen or sign a free agent like Risner.  But to get a 6th for a 6th at a position of strength is a good move - IMO.

I'm not bitching about the move, just saying Udoh is what he is at this point and think he has reached his potential.  You have to admit he pretty much stunk it up at LT and his play at guard wasn't much better.  If your happy seeing him get playing time at RT then so be it.  I just think Udoh is easily replaceable at this point in his career.

For all we know the Vikings could've looked at the OT prospects that are expected to be available in the 2024 draft & made the decision that they can find one on Day 3 that has as much potential as Lowe. Teams do look at the expected talent available in future drafts when trading for picks.

Apparently Chris Reed just re-did his contract again, sometime last week and has a guaranteed salary for this year. Looks like he might be the reason they don't sign Risner, at first glance.

I think I have more confidence with Udoh as our backup over Lowe, knowing he has plenty of starting experience, and when replacing O'Neill in three games last year, graded well as a pass blocker. Especially considering both Darrisaw and O'Neill have had injury issues. Lowe might have more upside, but I think we'd all cover our eyes if he had to come in and block the Nick Bosas of the world.

So we got something of value for a guy that wasn't going to make the roster?  And people are upset?

It wasn't like this guy was the next Darrisaw or even an average starter.

Yeah, saw this too. Wasn't sure he was going to make the team but it appears he will.
