Lots of ways to work the $ and guarantees, but it looks like $14mm annually puts him in the Patrick Peterson, Richard Sherman, Desmond Trufant neighborhood...

And he has earned it. Hopefully he can play at a high level for us another 5-7 years.

Hes among the top CBs,  but  he isnt a rewrite the salary brackets, top paid in the league type of DB.  Not trying to dis X,  he plays the spot great, but he typically doesn't have to cover very long with our front 7 and the defense that Zim dials up. QBs aren't sitting on many routes to come open before they go looking elsewhere.

I think that might be the kind of money he would expect if he hit unrestricted free agency next March, but the cost should be lower under these circumstances, right? He'l get a raise over his 2017 salary (more money sooner) and get some guarantees ahead of this season (when he could get hurt).

But the scheme and other players on a defense don't usually get factored in, do they? Brandon Browner got overpaid 2 years ago despite everyone knowing he was more product of the team he played on. I think a player would actually get angered if a team implied they were a "product of the system/team".

We need to sign Rhodes.

perhaps,  he might get more.  but as good as X is,  he has shown some warts at times and who knows what the market might do if he were a FA.   I am not saying that is a negotiating ploy,  just saying that the market isnt likely going to be so high for a guy that is a product of a great system,  even if he is a top level player,   teams arent likely to jump the salary range over 20% for that guy... or maybe they would.

We have to start keeping our players that are solid. We can't keep letting them test the waters thinking they will come back home.

Isn't that the whole reason many wanted to cut peterson before?
