Justin Fields is going to be a problem this season. I think everybody poo poo'n on him based on last season  (where he was still an elite playmaker with zero help) is going to be unpleasantly surprised 

his ability to make plays with his brain and arm have not impressed me yet,  I think he is still going to be a run first QB and that will be his downfall as it has for every other guy that plays the position that way.

I expect him to improve, but he's got a long way to go. In some ways the Bears may have damaged him by encouraging him to run so much last year. Made them much more competitive, but it may have stunted his growth as a passer. As a passer, he was the worst starting QB in the league last year...and by a good margin.

After bottom tenth, I'll take bottom third. But this isn't about that. Nor is it about the quality of the QBs we face, just the level of experience. Justin Herbert is a good example. Maybe a top five QB. A better QB IMO than Aaron Rodgers is at this point. But you don't shelve your blitz packages with him the way you would with a Rodgers...or a Brady or a Romo or a Manning.

its not about whether to blitz or not to blitz,  its the frequency of that blitz.  If the plan is to blitz at a high rate to make this D more affective, then teams will just account for that every play and be more apt to beat the blitz.  to use a blitz less frequently will make it harder to account for and increase its chance of catching them off guard.  Rodgers killed it against blitz happy teams, but looked much more mortal against teams that didnt have to rely on the blitz and used it to catch him looking for a bigger play,  most QBs are the same way... except Eli,  he was a scared little bitch.

I think the defense will be bottom 1/3 still as well. Just not enough incoming talent to offset losses but like MB just said Bottom 1/3 > Bottom 2. Progress is progress. Without much money to spend and with our earliest defensive pick being a third rounder who doesn’t project to start, we are going to be far from stout. The offense will have to once again do some heavy lifting. Kirk, JJ, Hock, even KJ, we know will deliver. I just hope Addison can give us some spark and Mattison is ready for primetime.

EDIT- Why KO didn’t can Ed? No idea. The point about it potentially discouraging future DC hires might have some merit. Also yeah, not having anyone else other than Pettine in the wings was another deterrant. Hard to believe things could’ve gotten any worse, but also difficult to picture they’d have gotten much better either.
