A Weekend Mock to Pass the Time

From what I read the Vikings are taking long looks at the quarterbacks from Stanford and Utah St.  Supposedly, they have strong arms and good mobility.  Not much is said about them since they play on bad teams.
The Stanford kid is as mobile as Kirko...Maybe less so.

Yep, and a lesser arm. I wouldn't touch him.

CJ stroud got a 18% on the cognitive test. Not sure if he’s used to others doing his homework or what happened. With the complexities of the NFL, that should concern people.

Its about the same level of concern you have with a player who is fast on tape runs a below average 40 time, it makes you ask "why"?. Stroud process' very well on the field and I think the "why" in this case is, did OSU somehow hide his inability to process information quickly? In my analysis, they didn't. So I wouldn't weight the S2 score as highly as a player who scored poorly and struggled with reading the field.

Geoff I know you mentioned a move into the top 10 for Richardson. That would be an all time swing of swings because of the price tag it would cost to move up and his bust potential. With the amount of holes we have left to fill on this roster and the few draft picks we have, it would take brass balls to do something like that knowing you won't be getting any immediate returns on your investment. How high are the Vikings on Richardson exactly?
Impossible to know, but even since I wrote this mock I think the likelihood of moving up the board has increased. People are too caught up in the sheer number of picks. If they can add a rookie QB and get out of Kirk's deal over the next 2 years they'll be able to buy known commodities making the draft less important.

Update- In the "draft predictions" thread on reddit, 98% of fans are saying trade down. So we're for sure trading up.
Hard to know what the Vikings will do. And I guess that's a good thing.

Trading up would obviously be for a QB. It would also mean the Vikings are willing to sacrifice adding impactful talent to the '23 team (and perhaps beyond) in order to get the QBOTF on the roster while Cousins is still here.

If the Vikings trade down, it means they want to add impactful talent now for the purpose of contending in '23, they recognize the flexibility that having Cousins provides, and adding the QBOTF is not as important as improving the talent on the roster.

Best of both worlds? Trading down, getting picks, adding talent AND adding the QBOTF. Probably the hardest to actually achieve though.
An interesting concept is if they can't navigate a high-end QBOTF this year, would they consider punting on early picks in this years draft? Would a win-now team with bust potential like the Commanders trade a 24' 1st round pick and a 2023 3rd for #23 this year if only players with 2nd round valuations are left on the board? They could still double-up on CB/WR in the 3rd where there is still some depth.

I think this is KAM's preferred way: but I think the Draft has to fall a certain way to increase the odds that he can maneuver to make something happen. Might need a little luck.

My concern is they love Richardson, especially after they got him on some 1:1's. I think his bust factor is right up there with Stroud. The good news is he'll probably be a top 5 pick and too rich to move up from 23.

That leaves maybe Levis or Hooker. And Hookers S2 score is right up there with my Labradors.

Still on the Cousins to SF trade plan here.

This team needs picks, it needs cap room, it needs a shot a QB of the Future.

Cousins for Lance and SF's (2) 3rds gives us 4 picks in the top 100 and removes a $25M+ voided cap hit next year.  Moving down in the first to either Seattle, Chicago, NYJ, Steelers would give us (2) 2nds

That gives us 5 picks in the first three rounds PLUS A POTENTIAL QB of the future.

If Lance turns out, you don't need a QB in the 1st round next year and give him a 5th year option.  If he doesn't you have 5 players from the top 100 of the 23 draft, cap space, and the 2024 draft to grab a QB with probably a top 10 pick.

2024 has to be the focus with cap room, a potential boatload of 2nd (2 2nds & 3 3rds) and 3rd year players (Cine, Booth, Asomoah), and possible a QB of the future on the roster in Lance

If you don't think we are real Super Bowl contenders this year, you are going to rebuild the roster and make your mark, this is the way to do it
The problem with this (pretty sound) plan is getting the Wilfs on board. They have shown zero willingness to sacrifice the short term for the long. I get it. Any given Sunday. But what we’ve been doing isn’t working. Maybe we can stay on the same course and just do it better… I’d love that! But it gets hard when you see teams like PHI, JAX, TB, LAR blow things up and have more success, while we wade in the middle of the pack. Winning a SB is obviously the goal but fans are pretty smart in 2023. The stadium will still be full, they’ll still sell a ton of jerseys and $12 hot dogs even if it’s a down year. Heck, Detroit was like .500 last year and talk to their fans and you’d think they were undefeated.
The bigger problem with this is who's going to play QB for the Vikings?

Lance has shown less potential to start in the nfl (let alone playing well) since getting into the league than before. IT doesnt sound like he did himself any favors up here last pre-season during all those SF/Viking scrimmages either.

I can get on board with Lance for picks, but not for a pro-bowl starting QB.

Yep. I think it's likely the Vikings get their QBOTF this weekend, but it will have nothing to do with Cousins.
My gut says that as well, although I'm trying to figure out exactly how they'll accomplish it.
If I was betting my own $$ on it? It would be a trade-down to acquire more picks and grab a QB in later rounds. With a hope and prayer it turns out better than Mond.

I think what the Vikings WANT is to trade back to the last pick in the 1st round, pick up some extra day two picks, and take Hendon Hooker there.

If someone jumps us, then we'd take a position player there, and fill some needs with the extra picks, and take a QB later. God knows they've looked at QBs at all levels this year, so they're clearly open to that option.

I am fine if they want to take a swing at Hooker, the arm talent and ability to run is intriguing enough. Jacoby Brissett's success really helps him in some ways since that is the comp in my opinion. But moving back to the end of the round to grab a few picks along the way makes it more worthwhile. The downside is it opens you up to getting jumped since you're somewhat telegraphing what you may be doing.

I think this is a legit concern.

I agree. PurpleFaithful's Labradors are going to disown him.
