I think differently. I think you should always be drafting QBs and
keeping 3 on the staff, your starter and two guys who are developing and then trading the guy who's not making the cut while he still has some value. I think its too important of a position to
not have options. The 49ers had a lot of
success because they had multiple guys that were good enough to get the job
done. It’s unfortunate that they didn’t
have 4 guys that were good enough, but if you’re down to your 4th
QB, you just call that fate.
I think there’s room for a strategy where teams draft mobile
QBs that can hit the ground running early and then get rid of them after their
rookie contract and just never pay massive money for their QB and don’t really
try to change their nature and convert them into a pocket passer because you’re
worried that they’ll get injured.
Sure, you can hope to draft a star that takes you to the promise land on his rookie deal. It's just such a long shot, especially when you consider that 7 out of the last 8 Super Bowls were won by highly paid veteran QBs whose teams found a way to build a competent roster of low-cost talent like Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey and Cooper Kupp. B) But when even draft HITS like Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Kyler Murray and Trevor Lawrence have as many combined Super Bowl victories as Kirk Cousins, it makes ya think.

So the GOAT has 4 of the last 8, but has never taken more than 12.2% of the available cap in any superbowl winning season. of the rest none over 12.3% of the cap, and Mahomes was still on his rookie deal and Foles was in philly for peanuts when Wentz was on his rookie deal, and lets be honest it was the supporting cast that they were able to afford that won that SB for Philly. Even the greedy Mannings allowed Peyton to play for that magical 12.5% or less. In comparison, including the upcoming season, Kirk Cousins has only worked for less than 12.5% once in his time in MN including the upcoming season. in fact his cap hit % has been over 15% for 4 of his 6 years in MN. what could the Vikings do with an extra 6 to 7 million a year to improve the OL? Hell Cousins is already 4.9% of the projected cap for 24, and he isnt even under contract with MN in 24.
and honestly, we are talking about HOF QBs in Brady, Mahomes and Manning here, Kirk is a damn fine QB, but he doesnt bring the game that they do so his cut should be less since he doesnt have the skill set that those guys have and will require more assistance than they did.
Can MN get over the hump and win a SB with Kirk Cousins, absolutely, can they do it with a QB regularly eating an extra 3 to 5% of the cap, I dont see it. Could they assemble a legit contender in a year or two with an extra 25 to 30 million a year to spend while some younger QBs learn the trade, probably more likely than ever stumbling into the series of events that would lead to our current trajectory becoming viable. He is like AD, good enough to keep the fans engaged, but never good enough to carry us over the hump, and as such... over paid.
Fun fact: In Bradys illustrious career he has taken over 13% once and over 12.5% only twice. He is scheduled to make Kirk Cousins money in 23 though... so we'll see how that works out for him.
