So much damage is done with fraudulent science. It can set back research on a specific disease decades as they follow a false trail. Horrendous. But it seems that other scientists were saying it wasn't replicable anyway years ago. Being wrong is ok, you learn from that. But like they mention, fraudulent is absolutely the worst.

This kind of supports those that constantly say to never trust the science, science is never settled, and to keep asking and looking for reasons why the science could be wrong. As soon as we stop questioning "the science" we risk never finding the real solutions to problems.

Science is based on previously accepted results, but there is always a chance those previous findings are flawed and the entire premise collapses like a house of cards. This IMO is why the push to accept the popular narrative of the times is potentially more dangerous than what was actually being researched.
How much time, effort and resources are spent following a false path in this situation?

Science, in the history of mankind, because of the scientific method, has been overwhelming right. Let's not go down this rabbit hole today of fake news and other bullshit to say that's why people didn't get the COVID vaccine. Like everyday Joe Blow knows a damn thing about medicine or science. We are immensely better off because of science in modern society. Saying 'never trust science' is bullshit. Challenge certain things? Of course. The scientific community constantly questions itself, its the beauty of it. In fact, its exactly why THIS story came to light: other scientists calling bullshit on it.

Let's keep in mind just because Karen can work the Google on the internet machine doesn't mean she's a scientist.

Nope. Some unethical humans don't wipe out all the innovation and progress of science, sort of like the charlatans that pervert and distort Christianity doesn't make all Christians bad. This example shows that humans are not infallible. As a researcher, this is disgusting. As a human being that lost someone I love to Alzheimer's, this is disgusting. There is damage to credibility but not all science is worthless. Science has saved lives. Science has brought us out of dark ages. The foundation is shaken. The direction of research will need to be addressed. This betrayal is an insult to all the good and ethical people that have provided valuable research for society. Weeding out the bad is important in order to put resources to better use.

Exactly, this came to light because other scientists were able to come forth and call bull shit. In other ares when other scientists have made similar claims in their fields they get ridiculed, defunded, and anything else by people that have no more expertise on the subject than the average NY cab driver, but yet since they are spouting the popular opinion they are right and that scientist is a charlatan? Can't have it both ways.

Politics needs to get out of science and let the experts find the real issues, not the ones driven by campaign contributions and kick backs.

Just as war is now a profit driven arena, science has become one as well and that is likely why we have stories like this one.
