Chicago game had a breakdown on the last drive, but outside of that, I typically love watching a QBs reaction when the Vikings only rush three, dropping EIGHT into coverage. Rarely is anyone open. The look of despair is satisfying. I think when you alternate 3-man rushes with 6 and 7 man rushes, it's got to keep OLs guessing and QBs heads spinning, and is probably much more effective than simply rushing 5 all the time.

Earlier this fall, Brian Flores was amused by frequent questions about blitz rates. He offered to chat further, and it led to a cool discovery: In his first season as the Vikings' DC, Flores has concocted a scheme never before used at the NFL level.
Flores' schematic migration began in 2022 when he was a Steelers assistant. The team shares a practice facility with the University of Pittsburgh, and Flores said he grew "enamored" by the concepts used by Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi. Specifically, zone coverage behind a 6-man front.
The scheme needed major tweaking earlier this season, and even though blitz rates have gone down, it's still a wildly innovative approach. Flores has leaned into max pressure/max coverage, and the Vikings lead the league in both 6-man rushes and 3-man rushes -- by a wide margin.
I have no idea how this will impact Flores' chances of getting a head coaching job in 2024. There are a lot of heavy issues to sort through. But if nothing else, Flores has enhanced his schematic reputation while showing how he can level up incumbent players.
