Andrew Booth - Nice consolation prize?

If Sauce & Stingley are both gone, Booth might be a good pickup, especially in a trade down. Some good options for the Vikings if they want a corner early.

Most Vikings fans, myself included, are wishing for Derek Stingley Jr. or Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner to be the Vikings’ selection on April 28th. If we don’t land either of them, most of us would be happy to get Trent McDuffie. However, Andrew Booth Jr. doesn’t seem to be getting the same amount of love. 
This is a bit odd, considering he played well at Clemson. Perhaps it is because he only started 15 games in his college career. Or maybe we fans have narrowed our focus a bit too much. Either way, we should open up our minds to the possibility of drafting Andrew Booth Jr., and we should be excited about that.Let’s take a closer look into why the Vikings might be considering Booth. This morning SI posted this tweet with a link to their tape breakdown of Booth’s traits. It is an excellent analysis, and I encourage you to take a look. Although we will go over the portions, I am most excited about it here.

The most impressive part of his game is his ability to blow up wide receiver screens. He is aggressive to either beat the block or go right through the block to make the tackle. This is an important part of being a cornerback, particularly with today’s game, as teams look to use wide receiver screens as an extension of the run game. 

If your cornerbacks can shut down these plays, your defense will be significantly better.
The next part of his game I like is his click and close in combination with ball skills. His ability to see the ball and react quickly to shut down yards after the catch is impressive. He is a good open-field tackler to prevent those extra yards. He pairs that click and close with his long arms and ability to go through the receiver’s arms to break up passes. This combination of skills will help him excel at the NFL level. 

While it is easy to hype up a player, we need to be honest about their faults. His most significant issue is opening up his hips too early, making him susceptible to quick breaking routes. This will need to be corrected early on, or the NFL wide receivers and quarterbacks will expose it. 
If that tendency can be coached out of him, his all the traits and abilities to be an elite cornerback in the NFL.The main reason the Vikings should target him in the draft is because of his ability to play press-man coverage. Mike Santagata mentions in the article in SI that the perfect system fit for Booth is a Vic Fangio system. Guess what type of defense the Vikings will be running in 2022? 

While we can still hope for Derek Stingley Jr. or Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner, we shouldn’t overlook the idea of drafting Andrew Booth Jr. He has everything you look for in a starting cornerback.
The best part is, with all the hype over Stingley, Gardner, and McDuffie, there is a good chance the Vikings could trade back to the late middle of the first round and draft him. This is precisely the kind of value creation one should expect a former Wall Street guy like Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to make.

I always like the idea of trading down and I think Booth would be a good value target in a trade down. You can make a case for Elam too. 

One trade that works is 12 to KC for 29 and 30. That's a major leap down, but I like the combo of picks that could be there...

Agreed, although I'm starting to wonder if Booth or Elam would last that long.

If we did drop down outside the top 20, I am hoping it will be for an additional first next year.  Good players to be had for sure this year,  but I think taking extra ammo into 23s qb draft will pay bigger dividends,  assuming they can find the right guy once they get there of course.

what do you all think about mccreary?  He has had some buzz as possibly the best corner. I cant  see sauce or stingley being available at 12.

before we dig to deep into the cb well, do we look at replacing Harry with another stud ND safety?  I think its likely to high to select a S,  but I have seen Hamilton slated as high as 7-9,  Harry has been a huge difference maker for our D for a decade,  do we pull the trigger on another Irish safety for the next decade at 12 if he were to drop?

this kid is what i think might be the best lock for a all pro in this draft,  he has the length and skill to play cover at the LOS and the speed and smarts to play center field, not to mention his eagerness to stick his nose in there on runs, sweeps, and screens.  his weakness is being put on an island, but honestly what safety can cover a deep zone in single high without guessing?

we have heard for over a long time that zimmer called Harry his eraser,  erasing coverage errors by the LBs and Corners,  why not take a shot at replacing one HOFer with another?  I know safeties arent the most decorated position,  but like TE they are very much the swiss army knife of their side of the ball and the great ones can pay huge dividends.

He seems like a difference maker, but he better be all world to take at 12. I was thinking CB is such a premium position but if the top 2 are not there a trade down for the tier 2 guys might be best for us.

I love the idea of picking up a 1st next year, but I'd only use a gained asset. So, trade down far enough to pick up a 2nd, then trade the extra 2nd for a 1st next year if you can find a buyer among the 1-player-away teams.

Problem is with the one player away teams is they are likely to be drafting later in the draft next year,  it would be nice if we could find a middle of the road team or one that takes a QB this year to trade with as that will likely net a better 1 next year to pair with ours to move up with.  Now wheres my crystal ball...
