Then Fire Those Two Scouts
#1
Courtney Cronin said on the PI pod yesterday that she was told by two scouts in the #Vikings organization at the 2021 combine that Wyatt Davis didn’t even have a backup grade on their scales and that, that pick was purely Spielman ignoring everyone and going to get “his guy”.

What the Courtney is going on here?

It sounds crazy but many GMs have "their guys" and pull this kind of thing. When it works out, great. When it doesn't, you get scrutinized. I can't attest to what Cronin said but this isn't specific to the Vikings by any means. When you're the GM of the team and you have conviction you've earned the right to pull the trigger on a few guys you like.

Kinda explains the animosity Zimmer had towards Davis...

This report doesn’t make any sense. No one would grade Wyatt Davis that low, other than someone who didn’t know what they were doing. You can go through the many pre-draft write ups on the guy and zero agree with those sentiments supposedly expressed by the Vikings “scouts”.
Honestly, it’s ludicrous. I have to hope they were yanking her chain. If they weren’t, they need to be replaced immediately.

Not sure if it's actually true, but I think we will learn a lot about Zimmer and Spielman after this season. If Davis plays and looks solid, then wtf Zimmer or wtf Rick if he sucks too. Same for Mond and if he can beat out Mannion in Training Camp. The last two years were such a shit show that it would be nice, as fans, to get some closure as to who may have really f*cked this thing up

The draft community is far from infallible, but to say that Davis didn't even have a backup grade is simply ludicrous.

TDN had him as plug and play. Not developmental, not future starter, not quality back-up.

This. Davis was actually invited to attend the draft. He didn't, but invites go to players based on conversations with NFL teams on which players have 1st round grades.

Is it possible some scouts were down on him? Of course. In fact I know some were. But his consensus value was more likely higher than where he was drafted, not lower.
