Anyone else read this? Since it's from MSN, I think it's more click bait vs. anything of real substance. Plus, doesn't Cousins have full veto power
in any Trade? Not that he would turn down a chance to go to SF and work with Shanahan again. Trey Lance is nowhere near the guy the 49ers thought they were getting. Declaring Purdy your starter when he hasn't even recovered from his surgery yet tells me all I need to know. 49ers don't have enough picks to get this deal done and make it worth our while. They want the same flexibility we have. Let Kirk play out his contract while Purdy recovers and be free of any financial obligation to Cousins after this season so they can make another SB run. The Vikings would be stupid to make that deal if Trey Lance is the center piece of that trade IMO.

It's click bait based on the Florio rumor that the 49ers inquired about a Cousins trade at the Combine. It's a move that makes sense to me, but I think if it was going to happen it would have already. I'd have no problem taking Trey Lance, a 3rd this year, along with a conditional high pick next season but it's just not the way the Vikings operate. They'll hold on to Cousins until they just absolutely can't anymore

All three of the 49ers 3rd Round Picks are Comp picks so they will be at the end of the round which doesn't do a lot for me. I know I will get a lot of arguments, but to me I'm not moving Cousins for anything less than 1 first round pick. Matt Ryan of all people fetched a 3rd Round Pick from the Colts last year. Even the 49ers gave up their 2nd, 3rd, 4th this year and next year's 5th in the McCaffrey deal. A late first round pick for Cousins shouldn't be out of the question. I'm not sure that Lance would bring more than a 3rd or 4th round pick right now. We need Cousins if we are going to compete for the Division this year which is wide open once Rodgers goes to the Jets. I actually agree with how Kwesi is letting this play out. We can always attempt to resign Cousins before he walks after we see how he does in year 2 of KOC's offense. If we let him walk, then we will get some comp picks and move on. We finally are in a position of Power with Cousins who has to play well for his next contract regardless of who's team he is on in 2024. Cousins is getting to that point where he doesn't want to start over with all of the coaching changes and instability he's had throughout his career. I think he wants to retire as a Viking, and I also think he knows that this Team and Coaching Staff is a great fit to maximize the rest of his playing time in the NFL and potentially win a Championship which is why he approached Kwesi with an extension proposal.

I think with or without Cousins we are likely running second or third in the division, certainly behind Detroit and let's see how Chicago rounds out their offseason, but they are going to be much better this upcoming season. I just don't know how much longer the Vikings want to play the "kick the can down the road" game with Cousins, his contract, the guaranteed money he wants on an extension, and his age. I think if you can maximize trade value now, the smart thing to do would be to trade him because you'd get more for him now then letting him walk in free agency next season for a comp pick. It's the Belichick "better to trade him a year early, then a year too late" philosophy. I think we are just delaying the inevitable rebuild or reboot at the QB position the longer we continue to play the game with Cousins. I've said it before but I admire what the Raiders did with Derek Carr. It wasn't working for them, he wasn't worth the money they were paying, and they were no closer to winning a Super Bowl with him under center so they ripped the bandaid off and went in another direction completely. The Vikings will never go that route under the Wilfs, but that's not to say it's not the way we should be doing it. Regardless of anything, Cousins money will be a cap hit for us through the 2027 season...so again, when is it enough?
I don’t see how it logistically works to trade Cousins even
to a team that he wants to go to. There’s
a lot of moving pieces to figure out, Cousins would have to be an integral part
of the conversation, and if it falls through that’s a subpar relationship for
2023 we have to live with. I think we’d
have to be pretty heavily compensated to move on from Cousins without having a
starting option in house, and I’m not sure Lance is really much of an asset in
a trade. I feel like if he’s your bridge
QB, that’s much more of a wish and a prayer than Cousins is.
He's 100% not being traded in 2023.
Trey Lance is garbage. Way too raw. The dude played hardly any football at North Dakota State. And the 49ers moved up and took him #3 overall. Invested a bunch of draft capital to do it.
If the Vikings talked to the 49ers at the combine it was much more likely about Lance than it was about Cousins. People always want to throw Cousins in there because Shanahan loves him. But no 13-win team is going to trade their Pro Bowl QB for an unknown. But send a couple of picks for an unknown to develop under Cousins? I could see that.

This makes a lot of sense. I would think it has to be coupled with a trade (Z, Cook, Hunter etc) to restore draft picks.

Yeah, I keep forgetting about our tradable assets. Hoping Hunter is not one of them. But if Z and Cook make it through the draft without being traded I'd be a little surprised.

I don’t like Lance, but could gey on board a 2nd, 4th type deal.
