I think this game is exactly the stereotype that this era of
Vikings embodies. In every game that
matters, the offense looks pretty impotent and the Vikings defense looks pretty
good but gives up enough big plays that the offense doesn’t seem to make.
I think in todays NFL, the defense did good enough to get
the win. It’s just too hard to shutdown
offenses every play of the game. This is
an offense-centric league. You need your
offense to go out there and get the win.
The offense needs to be the focus.
That said, Zimmer’s defense left so much on the table. I think this conservative style defense probably
is a good choice against elite QBs, but against subpar QBs, I’d much rather see
them unleash the hounds of hell and get in QBs heads and force them into
mistakes. Watching backup QBs outduel our
offense is embarrassing and highlights our lack of aggression all around.
I will admit. I was
starting to get to the point of thinking Cousins maybe turned the corner into a
guy we can win with. That illusion is
gone now. I don’t know if it’s scheme or
him being mentally limited, but when the gameplan isn’t working, I don’t really
see him adjusting things on the field.
Maybe I’m just tuning it out IDK.
I think there’s this thing that’s been happening for like 3 years now,
where opposing defenses will focus on taking away our Outside Zone runs and it
submarines our offense. I feel like it
takes away our identity and we have no other identity to fall back on. I think we’re not strong enough up the middle
to run on good defenses when they have taken away the outside runs and that
forces the entire game on Cousins shoulders, which I think is ok in games that
don’t really matter, but in games that do matter, I think it’s too much for him. I think our OLine is good enough that we
should be able to pass our way out of this.
There should be open options at intermediate and deep depths. I don’t know if this is this our scheme being
conservative or Cousins being conservative, but we should have been seeing Jefferson
and Thielen more involved down the field.
I also don’t think it would be a bad option to add a sixth lineman every
once in a while, when we need to establish more physicality. Our offense needs to have counter options for
when defenses take away our first plan, and I’m not really noticing it.
I was on Zimmers side, but this was the game that broke me. If he couldn’t be aggressive in this game,
when is he ever going to go out and try and win the game. It’s all anyone is talking about. He acknowledged it. I think we’re going to need to see a much,
much more aggressive team every single game going forward to change my mindset. I literally don’t care what analytics say
anymore, or if the odds support Zimmers decisions. If you ever have to choose between trying to
dominate the other team and doing the statistically safe thing, go for the win.
