Misc. Thoughts: Bengals
#1
Just my miscellaneous thoughts:
  • I can't believe I am about to say this (1):  The Vikes' special teams were the best unit on Sunday.
  • I can't believe I am about to say this (2):  The Vikes' 340 pound nose tackle was the best pass rusher on Sunday.
  • I can't believe I am about to say this (3):  The Bengals out rushed the Vikings 149 to 67.  Hard to go play action under those circumstances.
  • I can't believe I am about to say this (4):  I don't recall one designed roll out for Cousins.
  • Where's the beef:  149 yards against a revamped defensive line.  A defensive line that was supposed to be favorably comparable to the Williams Wall.
  • Bradbury:  Hopes spring eternal.  Strike that, hope for Bradbury to make that big leap is over.  He simply can't anchor.
  • Players who impressed:  I thought Virgil and Osborn played well.  Good thing Beebe was injured because I am certain he would have played in favor of Osborn knowing Zimmer.
  • Coaching:  I am sick and tired of the Vikings choosing a head coach that has kicked around the NFL as a coordinator for a quarter century or more.
  • Cousins:  So little pocket awareness.  I think his lack of awareness is in all aspects of his game -- he is a rigid thinking player, can't go off script, doesn't anticipate well.  He is accurate, but accurate like the guy who goes to a carnival and can hit the milk bottle.

This, I think this could have made a huge difference in the game.  He was not moving well in the pocket or reading the blitz and they didn't try once to move him around and get him outside where he may have had a better view of the field.  In addition, no hurry up offense, which also seems to help Cousins at time. I just don't get how we just kept doing deep drops all game long when he was just struggling back there.

thats what happens when you dont play starters pretty much all preseason. what we are seeing is the first preseason game for our starters. i knew this wouid bite us in the ass. gonna take a few more weeks until we get our legs under us, as well as coaching a real fing game!!

actually play-action would have worked in OT because the Bengals were selling out to stop Cook.

I can’t believe that a quarterback with Cousins experience has to be told to just throw the ball away.  it wasn’t until after the half time (when he must have been INSTRUCTED) that he started realizing that he could dump it and not take a sack which ruins the series.

Game ball would have gone to Joseph.

Career best from 53, with the game on the line.

Congrats to him.

I saw what I expected today,  there were preseason warning signs, aplenty.

But hey Vikes are in 1st place, I'm over it B)

I liked Joseph in preseason.  First time I can recall watching a guy kick in purple in a zillion years and thinking he looks the part.

If you haven't read this, might be worth a read: https://www.dailynorseman.com/2021/9/13/22671378/minnesota-vikings-weekly-player-recap-week-1-2021

This pretty much sums up my feelings (and gives info on rollouts):

I thought overall the team looked poorly coached and that is what led to the loss. 12 accepted penalties is entirely too many (5 declined penalties too). The secondary looked similar to last year with big plays given up. The team had 14 missed tackles which led to a giving up a large number of rushing yards. The play calling on offense did nothing to help slow down the rush. There were only 8 play action calls and 5 roll outs of Cousins. This was with the Bengals getting immediate pressure up the middle and left consistently. The lack of creativity is something we’ve come to expect from the Vikes. If it continues, it will be a long year and a new coaching regime should be expected for 2022. It is just one game and there is plenty of time to turn it around. I will not over-react and assume the team now goes 4-13. I will give them more time to figure it out, but this looks a lot like 2020.
