Preseason strategy

Why are they looking SO bad?
I think it's like the article this morning said: this is a top heavy roster. We win because our superstars (JJ, Dalvin, Hunter, Barr, Kendricks, etc) make game changing plays. Without them, we're just another team.

But we should be able to play at least competent football and they're not really doing that. Vikings absolutely cannot afford to start like they did last year.

Another listless performance overall.  Overall, ST's were much improved so there is that.

This has been a very strange camp/preseason so far.  We came in thinking we filled a lot of holes and adding a ton of depth and as things have progressed we seem to have a ton of question marks.

We have rookies that have not shown up or shown well enough - Darrisaw, W. Davis, Mond...
Then the rookie RB who hyper-extended his knee from the get-go of preseason game 1.  I think we were planning on a very heavy use of him in that game but ended up smelling like a Rose instead Smile
Browning looks terrible as the backup.
What is up with Barr?  LB'ers show some promise (this game) but we are very thin there.  Barr is such an enigma and has been for several years.
What has happened to tiny Dantzler falling down the depth chart?
Is our OL any better?
Is our ST any better?
I think our secondary clearly has to be better with - Breeland, Peterson, Mac - which would be a total revamp. I like our perceived depth with Boyd, Hand..but Dantzler is a surprise.

Coaching has been erratic from what I can tell on the very outside (just my opinion).  I'll admit I fell off the Zimmer bandwagon several years ago and I think he needs a playoff team and possibly a win to keep his job.  Also new OC/WR coaches that have shown little as of yet.

Lastly, and I think the elephant in the room, Kirk being the weirdo that he is and being our lead anti-vaxer.  Also, Harry.  So we basically have our 2 veteran QB's of offense and defense demonstrating ignorance at it's finest and no regard for the good of the whole team.

Just by opinion (notice nothing political unless someone wants to continue to equate health to politics).

But what started out (for me) as a loaded team with some great signing and I thought a very good draft has faded.  The shine going into the season has dulled.

Now, when we beat the crap out of Bungles week 1 and start the season on a roll I will be right back on the bandwagon.

Then, in typical fashion of my lifelong favorite sports team,  someone will come down with Covid (our 2 QB's miss time) and screw up the whole season.    No Drew Pearson push off, missed draft pick, Walker trade, the knee, 1 missed FG all year, Bountygate, etc.....No it will be which team overcomes the 12th man on Defense, Covid.  Hint:  It won't be ignorance.

But the only people creating this positive buzz for the Vikings this year is on the board. Otherwise, its a work in progress by everyone else. And we might have to accept that is the case.

But to your point: its a week to week league. A dismantling of the Bengals the and the bandwagon will be overflowing.

Barr, I wasn't too worried about Barr. Until now.

Yabbut it's not just the board. It's the Vikings beat writers, it's the players and it's the coaching staff. And let's not just dismiss the opinion of the board either. Many of us have been doing this for 50 years or more and can recognize a talented roster (or the lack thereof) when we see it.

Now, does that mean anything? Nope. One of the most talented rosters the Vikings ever fielded was the '89 team, who were crap.

Lackluster practice games aside, I still think this is a 11 to 13 win team if we remain relatively healthy. I will admit, though, the fact that 4 or 5 of our best players are unvaccinated hangs over this team like the dripping blade of a guillotine.

I feel the offense is going to struggle a bit with new pieces and new coordinator. I think the OL is going to struggle again too. Cousins, Thielen and Smith and whoever else is not vaccinated could be an issue. I think Richardson isn't. A whole lot of talent on paper but we'll see. Is this the point to think about life beyond Barr? It's absolutely bizarre overall. I was happy to see something from the defense though. Special teams did some good things too.

I saw Dalvin Cook wearing a mask after doing an interview with Leber, appears to be another of unvaccinated stars on this team...

Yeah I saw that. Not sure if that's a sign of being unvaccinated because there are vaccinated people still wearing masks.

Players on the vikings wearing masks or fans in stands?

At the stadium masks aren't required but encouraged so fans have either option. And of course there is the honor system that's kind of a copout.

Some stadiums are requiring proof of vaccination.

I guess the league is requiring unvaccinated players to wear masks.
