The $1mm question on Cousins...
#1

Can Kirk Cousins get better at improvising when things go awry?

Kirk Cousins turns 33 years old on Thursday and, yes, the Vikings quarterback still calls himself a "work in progress" when it comes to making "off-schedule" plays when all heck breaks down around him.
So how does a nine-year NFL veteran go about improving in that area? How does he and his coaches script a way in practice to get better at playing off-script in a game?
"That is a really good question," Vikings offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak said. "That's something we talk about all the time."
Certain quarterbacks just seem to have the knack. The best of the best right now is, of course, Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. Cousins has his strengths, but impersonating Patrick Mahomes is far from one of them.
"You kind of take two steps forward, one step back," Cousins said. "But I'll always try to get better in that area."
Is that even possible? When the offensive line breaks down — as it almost certainly will numerous times with prized left tackle Christian Darrisaw sidelined and right guard still a huge question mark — can the more robotic Cousins get better at improvising? Does he even have that club in his bag?
"He does, yeah; he does," Kubiak said. "It's part of his game that can improve, and he's working to improve on it.
"I think back to last year with our first game against the Packers, the first play of the game. I think it was the first play of the season. He took off running and made a big play to Adam [Thielen]. And I think back to that Tampa Bay game, getting a lot of match coverage, he took off and made some plays with his legs. It's a tool in his toolbox that we've got to keep using, and he's improving at it."
Kubiak said the Vikings structure team periods in ways that help Cousins work on improvising.
"It starts with the way Coach [Mike] Zimmer has a slower whistle at practice," Kubiak said. "He lets us get out of the pocket, he lets us complete plays and work on some scramble drills, which has been really beneficial.
"[Quarterbacks] Coach [Andrew] Janocko drills it with them every day — he incorporates an off-schedule component in there — so I think it's practice, but I think ultimately it's in the practice settings against the defense when Coach lets us play and finish."
Cousins, of course, doesn't want to abandon his primary strength — the arm strength and accuracy that's made him the third-most accurate passer in NFL history (67.0%) behind only Deshaun Watson (67.8%) and Drew Brees (67.0%).
"Don't forget what got you here," Cousins said. "What got you here was going through your reads, being a great decision-maker, throwing with accuracy, having precision, being able to go through a progression.
"So, if you just say, 'I'm going to change that and take off and run,' you kind of lose what got you there. It's more of a, 'Can I find that perfect balance?' And the nature of that balance is you're always going to feel like you're a little bit too much this way or a little bit too much that way. If you're always working on it, I'd like to think you're going to be in the right place."

I'm not going to compare Cousins to Fields who has never taken an NFL regular season snap. But I will tell you something that Fields can do, that Cousins can't.

Yes Cousins has been an accurate QB in the league for awhile. It is my hope he can get the protection he needs to make the Vikings contenders. But I wouldn't hold out hope on him being an off script guru or rushing QB.
I have a hard time seeing a QB that can barely escape free rushers and seems slow to throw the ball away as an improviser. It has never been where his strengths lie.

Here's what Fields has that Cousins never will. Fields has the speed to attack the defense in a way that they have to defense the run as well as the pass, on most every play. Fields presses the defense.
I'm not saying he has the accuracy to become an NFL QB. But there are 2 or 3 other guys, that do pretty well with that same skill.

I don't want to see Cousins improve on off schedule plays near as much as I want to see him afforded the protection to throw from the pocket. His accuracy from the pocket, or off the roll out make him special.

I also want them to improve Cousins protection. It is the only way the Vikings stand a chance to win it all, providing the defense , and special teams come around.

I wonder how there are any crayons left for kids with Cousins hate clubs chewing them all day.

3rd most accurate in history, and has done a huge amount behind a s**t o-line.  If either our defense or our o-line had been mid-pack (as opposed to dregs of the league), we'd likely have been in the postseason.  As ugly as the early games were, the TEAM was ugly...and he sure as hell improved despite lacking protection and the defense pissing away 30+ points, regularly.

I'll never understand what more he's supposed to have done, with his OGs as bad as they were.  Show me Rodgers or Brady winning their usual games with that kind of ineptitude in their protection...really.

Kirk Cousins is an elite NFL QB and we are lucky to have him. Most of our fans don’t know what they are watching. So they hate. They can’t help it. They simply don’t understand the position. His arm talent is ridiculous. If he had even an average line his accuracy would go even higher and he’d absolutely light teams up. It’s not like he’s a dink and dunk guy. His accuracy is legit.
Football is a team sport and as a team we haven’t been very good. If anything, Cousins hides just how bad our line has been. He rarely drops back with time. Even when he gets some protection, he’s constantly shaking off guys to try and free his arm to throw. The pocket has been almost non-existent with this line. Until that inconsistent line play is fixed, our offense will operate in starts and stops.

With all that said, Cousins could win a title with a good defense. Something nearly every super bowl winning QB has. The QB who can consistently win despite a poor defense is rare. Until we fix that area as well, we will not win a title, regardless of how good Cousins is. He’s the least of our problems. The team simply has to get better.

Cousins will never be appreciated fully by VikingNation. Zero doubt about that. Fans today want a Mahomes-Jackson-Allen-Murray-Wilson type modern NFL prototype. Big arm, flashy mobility, make something out of nothing. And there's certainly some truth to it but guys like Cousins are going to go the way of the Dodo bird even though they can be very effective. Defenses have never been more athletic, especially the front 7.

No, improvisation is not his game, but he's arguably the most accurate QB in the NFL. Easily the best on passes over 20 yards. That's nice to have too.

Cousins isn't elite.  He's just a quality QB.
The million dollar question has nothing to do with Kirk, he is what he is at this point, it's can the OLine play sufficiently well.  Kirk plays much better when they play well.
