So says dad...

Kellen Mond’s No. 11 Vikings jersey apparently is becoming quite popular in his hometown of San Antonio.
“They’re in hot demand in this town,” said his father, Kevin Mond.
The Vikings picked up Mond in the third round of the NFL draft on April 30, and many believe the former Texas A&M quarterback eventually will replace Kirk Cousins as the starter. For now, his father is doing his part to spread some No. 11 jerseys around San Antonio.
Kevin Mond was in the Twin Cities last week to see his son and he returned to Texas with 24 Mond jerseys he purchased at the TCO Performance Center. Each one cost about $125, so he spent about $3,000 on them.

“There’s every size,” he said. “They’re mostly for family and our close friends, Kellen’s support system.”
Kevin Mond is hoping one of the jerseys eventually will hang at Cover 3, a San Antonio sports bar and restaurant. The business already has an autographed Mond helmet on display.
Mond is competing with Jake Browning and Nate Stanley to be the Vikings’ backup quarterback to Cousins. Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak liked what he saw from Mond in spring drills, saying he has learned much about him since he arrived for a May 14-16 rookie minicamp.
“He’s a hard worker, and he loves football,” Kubiak said. “Football is his life, and he’s going to kill himself before he’s not prepared for a practice or a meeting, so I appreciate that about him. You’re not going to coach that into somebody. It’s something that’s built into them by their coaches and by their parents. And he’s got the work ethic and the want-to to get better. Now, he’s got to go get him some repetitions with his teammates to help him expedite that process.”
The Vikings concluded spring drills Wednesday with the second practice of what was scheduled to be a three-day minicamp. Thursday’s scheduled final workout was cancelled for what Kubiak said was a “reward” from head coach Mike Zimmer to the players for a “hard-worked offseason.”

On Wednesday, Cousins spoke well of how Mond looked during the spring.
“He’s done a nice job picking up the scheme,” Cousins said. “With the reps he’s getting, he is trying to make plays. He’s just on that same process of building his game.”

Speaking of Mond...

One of the biggest storylines of the Vikings’ training camp this summer will be how rookie quarterback Kellen Mond looks and how ready (or not ready) he might be to play in the NFL. This is to be expected given the Vikings selected Mond in the third round of the draft and any quarterback taken before day three is going to draw plenty of interest.
If Mond looks good in a preseason game, or Kirk Cousins struggles, there will be immediate clamoring about whether Mond will be ready sooner rather than later. That’s how fans and media approach it. Not surprisingly, the team has a much different approach and that was on display Tuesday at TCO Performance Center as the Vikings opened their three-day minicamp.
It was pretty clear through watching the 1-hour, 10-minute practice that the Vikings view Jake Browning as the backup to Cousins and that, if anything, Mond and former Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley are both third on the depth chart. Mond took part in Tuesday’s session shortly after signing his contract.
Mond’s status on a yet-to-be released depth chart — that won’t come until a few weeks into training camp — could change at any point, but the Vikings are likely going to be cautious to make sure they don’t rush the soon-to-be 22-year-old (his birthday is June 22). Patience is possible here because the Vikings have no need to rush Mond.
Cousins is entering the second-to-last season of his current contract and hasn’t missed a start because of injury since taking over as the No. 1 quarterback in Washington in 2015. But there does need to be a plan in case something happens to Cousins.
That’s where the Vikings probably want to get a look at Browning, who was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Washington in 2019 after throwing for 12,028 yards in four seasons and has spent the past two years on the practice squad. Browning is familiar with the Vikings’ offensive system and his presence ahead of Mond would give the rookie the luxury of being able to learn without immediate pressure that he might have to step in for Cousins.
Should Browning show he can’t handle the backup role, the Vikings could look to sign a veteran on the cheap, if they remain concerned that Mond simply won’t be ready to play in 2021. The last thing the Vikings want to do is put Mond in an immediate situation to fail and ruin his confidence before he ever gets started.

Well if Browning is the backup, we’ll be carrying 3 Qb’s, ‘cause no way you can try & put Mond on the practice squad…!

I'd be fine with Browning as our QB2 for a year. People forget that if he'd come out as a sophomore he would've been a 1st round pick. He also signed what was at the time the highest contract ever given a UDFA. So he has a measure of pedigree and upside. Plus he's had a couple of years in this system.

But as Kentis says, that means we carry three cuz you don't put 3rd rounders on the practice squad.

Good for Browning. I think he's a kid that can move the chains. Smart. He's no starter but he might be a backup and that's fine. Beats the shit out of Mannion.

Mond is way too green yet. Its not a dig on him at all. Let the kid relax and learn.

Browning is a smart qb but he has a squirt gun for an arm....like that arm strength is real bad. I will agree that it does beat the shit out of Mannion though haha
