They probably have some ideas on who they would move up for and at what slot. But all teams call teams above them and below them to see which teams are open to moving up or back, and to preset the terms in case they decide to do so. It eliminates the need for on-the-clock negotiation.

There are enough QBs, WRs and CBs so that if Sewell gets past the Bengals, he could drop a ways. Then you just need one key team to like Slater more. Extremely unlikely, but I've seen stranger things. 

I've heard it happens a lot where one team, thinking they had no chance at player A, scouts and falls in love with player B. Then when player A surprises by falling to them, they still go with player B.

I agree.  Plus skill players are sexier for GM's for job security.  So if there is a run on WR's and Pitts then we can see a Sewell drop.  But at minimum I would think we would need to get to Carolina's 8th pick ahead of Broncos (if no top QB will take him).  Then at 10 and 13 would be taken.  I can't see the Chargers at 13 not trying the same as us and move up for him as well.  This is fun!  Could you imagine if we could get Sewell?

We would probably have to give up 14,78, and 90 to match the points to get to 8.  That would leave our next pick at 119 without a trade back up.  Our needs after Sewell would be G, DE, S and a 3T - IMO.  Not a good Guard or 3T draft.  But some good depth/buys at DE and S.  

Bottom line for me is that I would give up that Capital for Sewell and solve our LT for a decade!!!

What kind of money does Fisher want?  Why not sign him,  trade back to add that 2nd rounder,  still go OL in the first and maybe even use one of those day 2 picks to move back up in the first to nab the USC kid to play OG,  and then have fisher, Bradbury oneill,  and a battle between the Trojan, cole, and Cleveland for the OG spots?

#5 being an O-lineman regardless if its Sewell or Slater probably means both are off the board or not within reach of the Vikings. Detroit/Carolina will end up being tipping points since either could go O-line, offensive weapon (WR/Pitts), or trade down with a QB needy team. If Sewell gets to #8 I have to imagine the Vikings would get rather aggressive.

I'm on board with signing Fisher as a "luxury" if we bolster the OL aggressively through the draft like you're suggesting.
But it's the Vikings. If they sign Fisher it's because they ignored OL early in the draft and will have to rely on Fisher to get healthy and play a lot this year.
