It happens more than the media wants people to know about.

Aren't most of these folk "legal " gun owners, until the bullet makes hole in someone.  There just may be an issue on who is considered "legal" or why are you "legal".  More guns in folks hands just ain't working to well.

So how do you suggest we fix it?
Shared database between jurisdictions for mandatory background checks.    End liability protections, for manufactures, sellers and owners.  FastTrack red flag designations so something common sense can be done without having to so much red tape.
I go along with the red tag designations as well as shared data bases for law enforcement... no reason the data base isnt already open.

as far as liablility protections... not sure on that one.   should budweiser get sued every time somebody has to much to drink and kills people?  the distributor?  or even the person that sold the budweiser?  if they are breaking the law then they already dont have protection,  but they should have to defend themselves every time somebody is injured by their products because some lawyer is looking for a quick pay day.

The red tag designation as long as there is a clear and expedient way for those tagged to prove their competency,  and this doesnt just become another tool by the anti gun crowd to take the guns away from those that are not a threat.
That's a false equivalency, alcohols purpose in society is not to be a weapon and be used means of defense or offense.
Guns purposes are not solely o/d either.   Would you prefer I use the makers of Chicago cutlery,  Louisville slugger,  or any of the dozens of other ways to use a product to kill somebody.  Buy any gun and you will get pages and pages of safety and warnings,  its the user that chooses to use that gun off label,   just like most any other product that can be used to harm another person.

Lets get back to making the person the criminal and not the tool.  And focus on ways to prevent people from becoming that person because anger, hatred, self pity, loathing, or whatever will find a way,  with or without a gun.

All your examples, bats, knives have other primary uses, there is only one thing gun's do, project high a velocity mass beyond arms length, your personal control, that's it.  Liability for it's effects would really put an emphasis on all those activities you hide it's true utility behind.  If you have some in some way contributed to a crime, you have culpability to society, just like a drug dealer.  Target shooting, hunting, or collecting, never a problem as long as your rights to don't infringe upon mine.

You think social media may make conformation bias more ubiquitous and easier to avoid?

The fucking owners of several sm platforms have admitted that their algorithms are designed to filter information to users usage and preferences,  so you being a lefty are not going to get random things that would support a pro 2nd ammendment position.  Just like I dont see the fruitloop shit I'm sure you receive.

I'm with Jimmy on this that I personally don't see any reason not to have a more robust background check.  I'm fine with red flags as long as the purchaser can know it exists and challenge it if they feel its wrongfully applied.

I also have the same concerns with Jimmy on liability protections.  You don't like the beer comparison but let take kitchen knives for instance.  Certainly produced to cut meat.  The knife manufacture cannot be held liable if you go on a slashing spree as you're using the item off label.

Edit lol, then I turn to page 7 and Jimmy made the same point about knives.
