Trade Down Curve Ball to Consider
#1
If the Vikings receive a good trade down offer and can secure a 2nd round pick, most of us have been focused on which OLineman or Defensive End we would draft with sliding back in the first round. For your consideration, and because I'm very bored today, what if we went in a completely different direction with that first pick?

I present to you Rashaad Bateman as that Curve Ball. Thielen is 30 years old and the rest of our receiver corps is very suspect. Bateman would give Cousins a great weapon who has speed, runs precise routes, and catches everything thrown to him. He could turn out to be Jefferson 2.0. He is definitely a first round talent and if you are going BPA, he arguably would be rated higher than some of the OLineman and DE's that would be available at the Mid to Late 20 range.

You address your Oline needs in the 2nd and possibly the 3rd with the depth at that position this year. Especially with a lot of the Small School prospects that look really good on paper.

Bateman could have a huge impact in our passing game.

We didn't need Randy Moss when we drafted him. Look how that turned out for us?

I think if we trade down, you're in position to draft a guy like Rousseau or Owen.

But, Bateman would be an interesting choice mid to late 20s. But, I'd take Smith at #14, so I might not be the best person to answer this. Fill needs via FA, get value in the draft.

If we deal 14 and a 3rd for Brown and 27 and Bateman is on the board at 27#?

You spend 0 seconds getting that pick in.

Brown, Bateman to go with last year's offense??? God damn!

Ill take your curve ball and raise you one more. Trade down occurs, get a 2nd, with our first pick we go OL or DE and then in the second round we take Dyami Brown. He's a baller as well

The whole draft is a crapshoot.  I like the idea of more cracks at it.

If you were to bypass drafting an OL with our 1st pick I think you have to go into the open market and find a quality starter or two.  We are short a starting guard and starting tackle right now from a positions unit that wasn't very good last year.  So while I can appreciate taking a run and anyone who would be a difference maker it'd be a hard pill to swallow if the BPA doesn't also fill a hole at OL, DL, S, LB, QB2 or a distant WR3.

I get it. It's definitely outside the comfort zone for a lot of people to go WR in that situation. What we don't know is what the Vikings plans are for Udoh. I have a feeling that he will get elevated to a starting guard position this year. They have been grooming him for 2 years. If they move Cleveland to Tackle, move Udoh to Guard, then you have 1 starter on the line to fill. Lot's of moving parts. Hopefully Udoh is ready to assume a starting role for us.

I think Cole gets a shot to compete for LG. They did give up a draft pick for him and are paying him 2M. He looked pretty good in limited duty at LG.

I'm hoping that the talks of moving Udoh to guard were simply to get him on the field...and guard was the best position for him considering we had starters on the ends.

If that's the case, then Vikings might be looking at the lineup Geoff mentioned a few weeks ago: O'Neill - Cole - Bradbury - Cleveland - Udoh. If you go into the draft with that, then your pick is obviously a guard to compete with Cole, and a middle round swing tackle to compete with Hill. That's a young, high upside line I'd be happy to go into the season with.
