Overpay.  Ricky and the gang dreaming of past glory, ignoring present reality.

Wow...Vikings exceeding expectations in free agency. So Peterson's only 30 years old. That surprised me. So is he a corner or our new free safety? Just read a blurb where he said he's willing to play safety to extend his career.
We will see how creative they get, but he may be position-less. He will probably take the majority of his snaps at CB but that doesn't mean he won't line up as a safety in certain looks.
Thinking they might keep him at corner. I tend to think the Peterson signing was the 3rd option after Jackson and Griffin signed elsewhere, so they were clearly looking for a veteran corner.

They've also shown interest in safety Keanu Neal. That one baffles me a little. He's not a free safety at all. He's pretty limited as a box safety. He's a good one, but that would mean Harry would be asked to play deep. I don't know...maybe to extend his career? I can't imagine Neal was used to leverage Harry's contract. That would make no sense.

Deal looks like $8 million in salary, $1 if he plays 95% of the snaps, and $1 if he makes All Pro. About the 20th highest paid CB.

If Hughes is healthy and ready, he can take outside while PP takes safety?  if Hughes is not healthy or done, PP takes CB

This is all about trust. Zim can trust a savvy smart vet to be in the right place, right time. With PP and Harry, Zim can feel more comfort in taking risks upfront with blitzing

Blitzing with two monsters up front either creating one on ones for the DTs OR FREE runners to the QB.

man grab a vet OG for the FA period and draft an edge rusher in the first round!

I'd be surprised if we signed PP to play S instead of CB...  I mean he's not the same player he was a couple years ago, but he's still a good player.  Does it make sense to sign a good CB to a 1-yr deal to play a position he hasn't played in the NFL?  This signing was more about Hughes being hurt all the time and the team needing another legit starting CB to go with Dantzler and Gladney.

Or, it could be a Charles Woodson like move to S.

Regardless, Zim has quite the track record breathing life back into older CBs.

Patrick Peterson has played in 92 games since 2015.

He's allowed 100+ yards in just 1

Exciting big-name player to add, it reminds me of Sheldon Richardson somehow, I suppose because of the one-year deal. Some thoughts about it..
  • They are "all in" once more, definitely not rebuilding.
  • This seemed to be a complete surprise, and so did Tomlinson - the Vikings are very good at keeping their negotiations from leaking. Next time I hope they sign some particular player, I'm going to pray there are no rumors about him with the Vikings...
  • Do you think Zimmer wants a veteran CB so he can shift the coverage from as much zone as they ran last year? He acknowledged that he did so to help his young CBs.
  • Several people mentioned Peterson mentoring the young corners. I haven't read if he is known as a teacher in the DB room, but it seems like amazingly gifted athletes  often are not. The players who had to teach themselves and grind it out become better coaches.
  • Does this rule out a return by Reiff? How much money is left for the OL?

Sendejo 2.0?

No doubt he's on the back-side of the peak...

His PFF passer ratings the last two years were over 100 for this first time in his career.

That said, we got baby DB's, major questions on Hughes and a first year DB coach too. So his presence will be a welcome one.

I just wish he were younger and potentially had more in the tank. A Newman 2.0 would be just fine though.
