Deal looks like $8 million in salary, $1 if he plays 95% of the snaps, and $1 if he makes All Pro. About the 20th highest paid CB.

If Hughes is healthy and ready, he can take outside while PP takes safety? if Hughes is not healthy or done, PP takes CB
This is all about trust. Zim can trust a savvy smart vet to be in the right place, right time. With PP and Harry, Zim can feel more comfort in taking risks upfront with blitzing Blitzing with two monsters up front either creating one on ones for the DTs OR FREE runners to the QB. man grab a vet OG for the FA period and draft an edge rusher in the first round!

I'd be surprised if we signed PP to play S instead of CB... I mean he's not the same player he was a couple years ago, but he's still a good player. Does it make sense to sign a good CB to a 1-yr deal to play a position he hasn't played in the NFL? This signing was more about Hughes being hurt all the time and the team needing another legit starting CB to go with Dantzler and Gladney.

Or, it could be a Charles Woodson like move to S.
Regardless, Zim has quite the track record breathing life back into older CBs.

Exciting big-name player to add, it reminds me of Sheldon Richardson somehow, I suppose because of the one-year deal. Some thoughts about it..

No doubt he's on the back-side of the peak...
His PFF passer ratings the last two years were over 100 for this first time in his career. That said, we got baby DB's, major questions on Hughes and a first year DB coach too. So his presence will be a welcome one. I just wish he were younger and potentially had more in the tank. A Newman 2.0 would be just fine though. |
