Keeping Barr on the roster is the biggest thing. After rumors of a trade perked up I tried to figure out a few ways to replace Barr this season. Nothing seemed to work. Signing Wilson would be a pretty obvious downgrade. And, given Barr's dead money, the Vikings would actually get more expensive at the position.

Taking a LB in the first is like nails on a chalkboard. What's more, I think MIcah Parsons might be one of the most overrated players in the draft. No 2nd rounder. Keeping Barr for one more year lets us move that draft need down to where our picks are clustered in the 3rd and 4th rounds. A guy like Pete Werner or Jamin Davis to sit behind Barr for a year would be ideal.

So it sounds like they will pay Barr about the same amount that would have been on the books as dead cap for 2021 (with some opportunities for incentive pay. Pretty good deal to have him playing here for effectively the same cap hit as if he was released.

Regardless of whether other NFL teams hold him in high regard when playing, his agent must have checked around and seen that no one wanted to pay him well coming off an injury. For Barr, this could be effectively a "one year prove it" deal to reestablish his value before next year when the cap should be higher.

Perhaps?  But suppose he walks next year and Wilson walks this year?  They could find themselves needing a LB next year.

Wilson played well enough last year.

He did not do all the imaginary things that Barr does but he also did not have a nose tackle up front.

Barr played with Joseph his entire career and gets to play with Pierce this year.

I'm sure that has nothing to do with keeping offensive linemen from getting to the next level though.

I hope it works out well.

Sounds like the Vikings are on their same path of running it back to see if they can somehow get lucky enough to not get their arses handed to them in the playoffs.

You'll be surprised when you see what they do tomorrow/this week then.

I hope they do make some decent signings.  Doesn't mean I will be all giddy about the prospects.

So far, Zimmer has made the playoffs 3 times in 7 years and got whupped the last two playoff exits.

Last year was a disaster from a personnel standpoint.

Making the conscious decision to go with Elflein and Dozier/Collins/Samia is indefensible when you combine it with not drafting a guard until pick #253.

Making the conscious decision to go with all very young and inexperienced corners was also a very questionable decision in terms of competing for a title.

Trading a 2nd and spending 7M on Yannick without any assurance you could keep him was throwing more bad decisions at a feeble attempt to try and get to the playoffs.

There is not a whole lot to be excited about because they have not provided much.

Yet every year since 1969 I keep coming back for more.

I hope you are right and they finally can put something really good and sustainable together.

What did you expect?  No offseason, limited training camp, no preseason, their top signing opts out, the best player on D and maybe the team is IR’ed. Then they go on to loose half the defense to injuries. 

What exactly did you expect?  All that, we loose what 6 straight out the gate?  We were talking about top QB picks for awhile. Then Cousins got used to playing with our offense and we ended the year as a top 5 offense and narrowly missed the playoffs. 

I’m not saying we’re gonna be a force this year because anything can happen but I think we’re headed in the right direction.

That is a big win for the Vikings, especially considering that Barr just came out and said that he was not going to accept any kind of restructure.

The best pay cut is the one where the player gives money back. I do think getting to FA as a 30 yr old with pass rush potential is a small win for Barr but the Vikings basically pushed off cutting/trading him this year, saves all but $2M of the cap benefit, and didn't increase the dead cap number for 2022. If you crunch the numbers vs. a cut the Vikings seemingly got Barr back for $2M on the cap, with only the cash being higher. Its strong negotiating.

Sounds encouraging.  Though I hope one of the things expected wasn’t signing G Kevin Zeitler, who signed with the Ravens this morning.   Given the Vikes supposed trade interest in him in the past, and the seemingly moderate price tag, I was thinking we make a hard run at him. Do you know if we were seriously interested in him?

The certainty of Anthony Barr returning to the #Vikings now makes it much less likely that free-agent linebacker Eric Wilson will be re-signed. Denver, where former #Vikings executive George Paton is the general manager, is a possibility for Wilson.

So they save $3 mil against the cap. If that is correct good deal for both sides. Barr shortens contract and team gains cap this season.

Pretty tough to argue with this one (though I'm sure many will). Trading or releasing Barr and signing Wilson results in 7.5 dead and about $8M in money to Wilson (estimate per PFF), downgrading the talent at the position, while increasing our expenditure by about half a mil. As it is, we keep the talent and save $3M, allowing us to upgrade elsewhere. $3M in cap might not sound like much but it's probably what a 2nd tier guard will require.
