TX Mayor: Only the strong will survive!

Maybe deregulation isn't awesome?
I was listening to a report from Lubbock, the only part of Texas not having power issues, is also the only area in the State not on the ERCOT grid.  They are scheduled to join ERCOT next year.  The other issue is that with deregulation, independent producers can supply the grid, and when Gas prices spiked they went off line, wonder how this will get spun.  Listened to Grassley talking about ethanol market in Iowa and he's thank full for the EPA going back to standards and no longer granting waivers, but in the long run our economics are dependent on fossil fuels, gosh why not get away from a 2 crop state economy.

I mean he’s not entirely incorrect.  He probably should have learned from Trump and shut his damn mouth though.

But that doesnt absolve people from taking care of themselves. People need to plan to survive when crazy stuff happens. We’re in the middle of the same storm. Power was out. we’ve been helpping neighbors and offering warmth, food and a place to crash if they need.

We have another round tonight. If it comes as snow we’ll be ok. If it comes as freezing rain we’re screwed.  It will be north of a week if it comes asfreezing rain for power to come on.

Ive got enough K1, LP and gasoline to go a long long time so we’ll be ok.

want to fix ethanol and lower gas prices... switch the plants over to using other sources....like switch grass.   interesting read here and it hits on what is wrong with "green" energy in this country.

https://news.mongabay.com/2008/01/switch...s%20(PNAS).

why does all the gov money go to support corn based ethanol production?  follow the money...much more money in genetics, seed, fertilizer, farm equipment, and all the other add ons for corn than for a perennial grass.  the same goes top to bottom for all forms of alternative energy spending... its not being spent wisely and ultimately that is why it will fail.

look at wind energy,  they are building turbines in SD at a mad pace,  we are way over producing here in SD which could be a good thing,  but the national power grid is so screwed up the electricity produced here cant even get far enough away that it really makes a difference.  why build govt subsidized electrical generation where it isnt even needed?  Monday when our neighbors to the south were in the dark,   hundreds of thousands of megawatts of generation was sitting idle?  makes no sense.  I am told its because the grid isnt strong enough in the north to "ship" the electricity out of our area,  of course yesterday when gas had spiked they started doing rolling black outs up here because the NGas peaking generation stations that are used to make up the short comings for wind were going off line due to the crazy high demand price for NGas created by the south plants all running at full capacity.  This isnt stable or smart,  we need to get more pipelines built because until the grid is updated,  and battery technology catches up,  like it or not our country is still very very dependent on gas, oil,  and should still be improving coal as well.

right now the way the wind energy is being deployed its like launching airplanes with no place to land them.

fix the grid first and then look for the better ways to charge it up IMO.

want irony?  so Minnesota wont allow any more non renewable power plants to be built.. its their prerogative as a state,  we have all kinds of wind towers in my back yard in eastern SD ( I can see MN from my from window),  but the Isaac Walton league in MN spent a shit ton of money on lawyers to block a proposed new transmission line from SD to the east through MN that would have carried all this wind energy east to where they need it most.  This whole energy thing in this country is so F'd up its maddening.

i will be curious as to where the breaking point is on oil.... we use oil for so much more than fueling our internal combustion engines,  when those engines are mandated out,  and oil production is way less profitable because so much of the market is gone,  what will that do to the markets that are currently relying on the by products of the oil industry?  I can about guarantee everybody is drinking water that comes through a PVC or Poly line to get to their glasses,  how much more expensive does plastic resign become when oil is not being refined at such a high rate?

its going to be an interesting ride my last couple decades... lots of boogie men will be revealed to be shadows, and lots of perceived safe choices will end up being the real things of nightmares.

Sadly his delivery gets in the way of the message.  We had a terrible wind storm a month ago.  Knocked out power for lots of people.  We were out for 3 days, luckily it wasn't too cold, but we had made preparations.  Generator being #1.  It was a good test run for the crap system that is coming down.

Also, we have good people willing to help each other out.  Lent out our generator after we got power back.  Others offered to us if we hadn't had one.

But I feel for those who live in highly populated areas.  It is why I don't.

Prayers for those affected.

Been on the switch grass bandwagon for a couple years, great rotation, but you need a cellulosic processing, plant which is different than what the COOP's have currently invested in.  Iowa is a monoculture for crops, Corn-n-Beans can be used as a single word here.  Everything is set up for handling those two crops, the economy, markets and farm to market infrastructure are setup around only those two.  All profit for pork and poultry goes out of state.  (Editorial Alert) Last two years, IA farmers have received market offset payments, China embargo,  in addition to subsidies and crop insurance, between the three revenue sources it has accounted for over 40% of Ag income, but we sure hate communism.  As far as the wind power, last I heard, the farmer was payed 2K a turbine per year and could harvest within 10 foot of the base, quite the yield improvement over $5 corn and $13 beans.  As far as Petroleum Hydrocarbons are just source molecules for non energy products, let the market drive that price, make the subsidies for other power sources equal and  dino-juice will transition the same way harnesses, whips and steam did for transportation, just a matter timing.

I'm happy to hear you did that. I asked my brother in law in Dallas if they were OK and he responded cheerfully that they were. Years ago he caught the camping bug from me and has since spent about $20K on high end camping equipment. Sent pics of all the kids in their goose down bags and their $1,000 insulated tents. He's definitely among the strong and loved what the mayor said.

I lived out in E. Tn in the early 90's and we had a one of those ice storms that took down TVA power lines from Loudon to Maryville.  We were without power for 3-4 day's, listening to the Knoxville am call in from people needing help or just sharing.  Never forget one guy with his drawl explaining to folks not put their food in snow banks to keep it frozen, a pack of dogs came by and took all his.

Dang, that is some serious coin on camping equipment.  That isn't an option for everyone of course, but to everyone that has the latest iPhone, but doesn't have a bit of food reserves, or emergency clothing, they have made a choice.  It just wasn't a good one.

I feel for them and am for helping them through this tough time, but there is something to the grasshopper and ant parable.

Do the strong head to Cancun while their constituents freeze to death?

Asking for a friend.
