Thuney Likely To Hit Market
#1
The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports the Patriots and impending free agent LG Joe Thuney have "never been close to an agreement."28-year-old Thuney played 2020 under the franchise tag. Another tag and monster cap number isn't going to happen for an interior lineman, and Howe believes the Pats' success with drafting and developing guards will tilt them toward avoiding a long-term deal. Thuney is one of the better offensive linemen in all of football, while the Pats are currently built for the run. We wouldn't say there's a zero percent chance Thuney re-signs.

There is going to be some quality interior lineman available in free agency, just wish the Vikings had the cap space to be active at that position.  I really like both of the Chargers guards as potential fits for us.  Forrest Lamp was someone talked about a lot on this board a few years ago who had been injured but finally played the entirety of last season at left guard. Dan Feeney their right guard was a guy who's tape I loved out of Indiana. Both young, quality players with upside who fit our scheme

Although unlikely if the Vikings force-fit a high-end player into the cap its likely going to be Thuney. His fit is just too good and they had interest in trading for him last off-season.

With a player like this available, I really wish we knew what we have in Udoh playing RT.

ONeill to LT, Reiff (who played well) off the books.

ONeill-Thuney-Bradburry-Cleveland-Udoh could have serious potential and a nice blend of contract values

What about Scherff, know you were talking about him last offseason before the tag that he was willing to take a pay cut for either Chiefs or Vikings. You think he can be in play this year?

Maybe. The issue with Scherff is his durability. Do you want to carve out the large amount of cap space needed to sign him if you know he isn't going to be on the field for 16 games (17 now)

I think Udoh is one of those players that the fans like more than the team does.

I continue to find the Reiff comments head-scratching.  LT is the toughest position to find on the OL.  Reiff was the best, or perhaps second-best offensive lineman we had last year.  The OL sucks and needs big improvement, but we have very limited resources.  Step #1: get rid of Reiff.  Hmm....

It's not based on Reiff's play. He was very good last year. But, would the team be better off, cutting Reiff, drafting a LT & using his cap savings to address other needs?
