Breaking: KK to OC

I just expect that there are better candidates out there than the likes of Klint Kubiak, Adam Zimmer, Britt Reid...
Not one that offers continuity. Vikings need to fix the defense. Not a lot to do to the offense other than find a guard. And the last thing we'd want to do is force all of them to learn a new offense.

Nepotism in the NFL -- I hate it.  I hope Klint is up to the task and will prove me wrong, but this looks like another hire/promotion in the worst version of the NFL's good old boys network.  Looks to me like this was all pre-arranged with Gary agreeing to come on board only if he could bring his son and with promises of future considerations.
Yeah...but what's wrong with that? I think that's exactly what many of us were hoping for when we brought on Gary. The key is continuity. And that's what you get with Klint.

Now...does he have a feel for calling plays? That remains to be seen. If he does, he's going to be one of the hotter HC candidates next year. Because I don't care who the OC is, he's a product of the players he has, and Klint will have Dalvin and JJ and Thielen. So another year, and potentially another OC.
This. I don't get the whole nepotism issue. Yeah, he's Gary's kid, but guess what...who better to keep the continuity for this offense? Jr. has been Cousins' QB coach for his two best years ever, he's had the luxury of learning from his dad who is right up there with Shanahan when it comes to this style of offense, and he's been here before as a WR coach while working with Stefanski.

I get the trepidation about him having never called plays before, but you gotta start somewhere.

Exactly.  I am seeing some of the same concerns being voiced about Klint as we saw recently with Stefanski...  young guy, no prior OC experience, never called plays, internal candidate, etc.

Well, Stefanski turned out excellent as an OC and he now flipped that into being a successful year 1 HC for a franchise that has SUCKED.

Maybe we should all quit pretending like Zimmer is some dinosaur and needs a yes man as an OC.  He's actually had some good ones, his problem is they usually do so well they leave for HC jobs (Shurmur and Stefanski) or in Gary's case...  retire again.  The only two that didn't work out were DeFlop and Norv.  I think the issues with Norv were his system was too rigid and let's face it, we weren't scoring enough.  I think that led to him leaving.

Then you have DeFlop who wanted to throw all the time out of the gun with one of the best PA passers in the NFL... if you read Zimmer's recent comments...  he actually praised the offense this year because he thought it was a perfect fit for what his QB does best...  maybe Zimmer does know something about good offense.  The OCs that ran the offense the way he felt was best for our personnel resulted in some of our best offensive seasons in recent memory.

Just sayin'...

Look across the league, there is more nepotism in football than you think. I get the stability angle. It seemed like once Klint came over that he was being groomed to step into the job. Maybe he gets more freedom because he is younger and has the seal of approval. He is already in the system. Who knows? We'll see what happens.

Get that reason based garbage outta here.

Norv seemed to like the deep drops with a bad line and a young QB.  Norv was hired because Zimmer wanted an experienced OC as he was a rookie HC.  Probably was the same reason he got canned, he was experienced and didn't think Zimmer knew anything about offense, so he wouldn't change.

Kinda wish we could bring Shurmur back. He ran a great offense with less than great weapons.

No coach in recent memory was better set up to succeed than Kevin Stefanski in Cleveland. The team is talented. Again, the players end up making successful coordinators and head coaches.

I can just see it now, I'll be with family watching an intense 4th and 1 moment and I'll say it out loud "Come on Pubes, come up with a big one now!"
I don't want to do that... honestly, I don't. Wink
