Good question. Houston is a mess and no one seems to want to go there.

I refuse to believe an organization can be this dysfunctional. So I am going out on a limb to say the Texans may be outsmarting everyone and doing a reboot. Shedding all the large salaries to start all over and build from ground up.

As The number of QB's, coaches and FO folk  getting 86'd increases more frequently , so will the number of replacements who are recycled.

Actually my question was why the F would anyone hire a 68-year-old has-been who had nothing but losing seasons at Illinois and whose pet defense got figured out by the NFL nearly a decade ago.  Even Houston could have promoted internally or found someone with a pulse.

That's my point. No one seems to want to go there so they get Lovie Smith. He is not an up and comer. He is not innovative. They had to get someone from college. He last coached in the NFL in 2012. The game has changed. At least he is going to be a coordinator and not a head coach.

This is going to be a disaster in Houston. In my opinion they've fallen victim to the PC/media mob and hired coaches based strictly on race instead of the best coaches for the job. Why else would you hire a 65 year old first time head coach who was the "passing game coordinator" for one of the worst units in the league or brought back a defensive coordinator who's time has clearly passed him by and was one of the worst coaches in college football?
