Could Trey Lance be there when Minnesota picks?

CBS is absolute garbage since Brugler left for The Athletic. But, yeah Lance could be there...are you going to sit him for two years, or take a massive cap hit and send Cousins packing, or have the worldest most expensive backup QB?
Lance represents a huge gamble in my opinion. When I read things like he is given a lot of half field reads, level of competition, and our track record with QBs, I pass. If Wilson is there, that's another story. I would think it's more likely to grab an OL prospect and not royally screw up the cap that is likely to take a fair hit due to the revenue shortfall we are about to see.

Its funny, if one is going to fall (QB) I think its going to be Lance. I think Jimmy isn't a fan of Lance, either, and thinks the same as you do.

Been a lot of talk about Fields, Lance, Wilson and/or Trask, getting picked in the top 10, and that could happen, but I think it's equally likely that half of these guys will drop under further scrutiny.
For example, Lance isn't playing in 2020. And has exactly 1 non conference game under his belt. Trask doesn't have the arm or the athletic traits everyone is looking for. I'm not a big believer in "past is prologue," but Fields plays at Ohio State, who's never once produced a quality NFL QB. I like Wilson as much as anyone, but he's never seen pressure or a quality defense.

If they are in position to take a qb, take him. The question is who is going to pick him and who is going to develop him.

@MaroonBells I'm with you on Fields. How hard is it to be a QB in Columbus with the plethora of talent around you? But...

Being from Fargo, I've seen plenty of Bison games. Trey is an outstanding athlete, for sure. He's better than Carson Wentz was as a college QB, IMO. I was shocked Carson was a top 1st rounder going into his draft. Personally, I thought he'd be a 4th rounder, lol. That's not a knock on his talent. It's just hard for me to guage Bison QBs because they're so run oriented. Yes, both Trey and Carson throw some beautiful deep passes, slants, and sideline routes, but most of the time it's all about play action and having wide open receivers.
Also, whenever Trey goes back to pass, it always seems like he has the option to run. I'm not sure I'd risk a 1st on a running QB that you hope will turn into an every down NFL passing league QB. There are plenty of scouts out there that know way more than me, however.

QB's will get sorted out at the combine and their pro days. One of these guys will run slow and one will run fast which causes them to slip/jump.

Lances biggest detriment imo is that lack of body of work. Coaches didn't get a second shot at him and its that second year where tells and flaws get exposed and teams are more prepared to take away what you excel at and make you improve as a player. All college QBs will carry a degree of uncertainty, but division 2 ( sorry I say the same about SDSU and USD) QB just don't see the talent at their level and need more than 1 impressive season for me to be a believer, even if that 1 season was as amazing as Lance had in 2019. |
