I for one, dont think he is all that bad of a QB, and doesnt deserve much of the blame he gets for “losing” games. (it was a year ago today, that we came from a huge deficit to beat the Broncos, but hey that was all Diggs, Thielen and Smith.......)
But I think we can all agree that he is being paid beyond his productivity (moreso this year)
IF.....Cousins would restructure a “team friendly...home town discount” that kept him in Minnesota for another five six seasons...
would you want him around?
would you have him starting / mentoring?
or cut our losses, hope for the best in the draft, and kick him to the curb?
I would agree, he gets more than his share of hatred form "fans" but he is certainly reliable and is better than what the alternatives were. I would love if he could do something with his contract to a team friendly one but I don't see him giving anything back. With our 4th win and probably a few more this year we are not drafting a QB that would displace him anytime soon so ask yourself if not Kirk, than who should be the QB?
The issue is the team has NOTHING in the pipeline QB-wise. And this upcoming Draft won't help as Minnesota will probably be picking mid-round in the first and have no 2nd. I don't understand how the team is going to allow Cousins to get paid what he's supposed to get paid on the last year of his contract, it's monstrous.
If he doesn't restructure we have to move on period, if he does restructure with much less guaranteed and a lot of incentives then I would consider it, but it's way past time for a real QB competition, they need to be drafting QBs until they find their unicorn.
It is kind of nice having stability at QB. Something we haven't had in decades. That said, Cousins isn't going to win a Superbowl so we probably need to go back to the draft and find one that can.
Need a young mobile QB who can learn with Kubiak, an improving OL and a major set of weapons. We will probably play ourselves of out of the kid at BYU or Lance, but it would be nice to dream for a minute of having either with Jet, Irv, Adam, Rudy, another rookie WR and 2 dreaded monster at RB

Most glaring issue of Spielman's career. He has never had a viable young talent in the pipeline. I don't fault him terribly for the Ponder pick, he had talent, couldn't get out of his own head. Liked the Teddy pick, we know how that ended. Thought the Cousins signing was the best option at the time.
BUT he never had meaningful talent, day 2 picks, in the QB room.
The OP is a good question because restructuring is the only way the Vikings can "move on" before 2023.

Jimmy, why would Cousins accept a deal with less guaranteed money? He can stay here the next 2 seasons, earn $56M whether he starts or even suits up, and then go sign another deal with some other team. Why would he, instead, take a deal where he is guaranteed only something like $30M for 3 years? The guaranteed money gives the Vikings no out. They could threaten to cut him before the next league year starts, but he would still get $41M, and we are beyond getting a good rookie QB in the next draft now, AND admitting Cousins' extension was a mistake requiring us to eat $41M for nothing is a major embarrassment.
And if he's wrong, then we draft a rookie QB in 2022 (IMO you guys are dreaming if you think Spielman will touch a QB before round 5 next spring, he is still all in on Cousins for one more year), and Cousins as a bridge and backup for $14M per season is tolerable while you have your new QB on his rookie contract.

honestly, i dont want him to accept it. but KC is not a spring chicken, doesnt need the money, and appears happy in MN (close to his family in MI) so I cant say what he would or wouldnt do, he has to be willing to acknowledge that part of our 1-5 start was squarely on him not taking care of the ball and not being able to move the offense, so maybe he wants to stay here and retire in a year or two?
If it were me I am eating that 31 million hit for next year, and with a june 1st designation, the 10 million the following year and be done with him. no way would I lock into that 45 million for 2022 for a guy that hasnt proven to be more than a game manager. If I were the Wilfs I would hope I could see that this QB isnt going to get it done and reminds Spielman that I was looking for a GM when I found him and that if he wanted to stay in MN that he needs to take the QB position more seriously and do what about every damn fan has wanted since Teddy went down and that was to pony up and get back into the QB draft and quit trying to patch shit together around game manager types.
