Ngakoue to Vikings

Remember all those who argued that paying Kirk Cousins would prevent us from fielding a competitive roster? Well, we've paid him for 3 seasons now and have him signed for two more. Meanwhile, we've been able to keep and/or sign Ngakoue, Hunter, Pierce, Kendricks, Barr, Harry, Harris, Rudolph, Thielen...and so far anyway, Cook is planning to play for us this season, hopefully allowing us to push that money to 2021, when contracts for Reiff, Rudy and maybe even Harry go off the books. I know that's a hard pill, but Harry has zero dead cap in '21. And about a $10M savings.
I think Harrison is a prime restructure candidate.  No dead money, give him some guaranteed money, lower his cap hit, and let him retire in purple.

Adding that chess piece is awesome...They'll end-up moving those DE's around and you can bet Capers was whispering sweet schemes in Zimmer's, Pattersons and RS's ear the last few days too...

That article also made a good point...  one reason this trade probably happened is Trader Rick's ability to accumulate extra draft capital.

I know this is a common complaint here (all the trading down and around), but I don't think we make this move without Rick getting an extra 4th and 5th in next year's draft.  Add in the compensatory pick for Waynes, and as Maroon pointed out above, we have tremendous flexibility to get back a 2nd if we want it.

Just another interesting aspect of this trade.  This really brightens my outlook for the defense this season.  Even without Pierce, we're loaded along the DL, have Barr and Kendricks at LB, the best safety tandem in the NFL, and some young CBs who are appear to be playing well beyond their years...

I agree with this, I dont think the Vikings fleeced the Jags...Now if he ends-up being another Danielle Hunter? I can say we got good ROI. Maybe not a win/win for both franchises, but the Jags shouldn't be embarrassed by this at all.

Vikings lose their 2021 2nd rounder and a conditional 3-5 pick in the Ngakoue trade, but still have their 1st, two 3rds, three 4ths, two 5ths and two 6ths.

So that conditional pick will be fairly painless. What's more, I wouldn't be surprised to see Rick figure out a way to use his extra picks to recoup a 2nd.
  1. Vikings’ first round pick
  2. Vikings’ second round pick (Ngakoue trade)
  3. Vikings’ third round pick
  4. Compensatory third round pick (Trae Waynes)
  5. Vikings’ fourth round pick
  6. Buffalo Bills’ fourth round pick (Stefon Diggs trade)
  7. Chicago Bears’ fourth round pick (Draft day trade) (estimated Ngakoue trade)
  8. Vikings’ fifth round pick
  9. Baltimore Ravens’ fifth round pick (Draft day trade)
  10. Vikings’ sixth round pick
  11. Compensatory sixth round pick (Mackensie Alexander)
  12. Vikings’ seventh round pick
The conditional pick is in 2022 so the Vikings only lose their 2nd round pick in the next draft.

If we're going to give up a 2nd round next year is a good time to do it, there may be no CFB in 2019 and at best it will be a strange year.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes Ngakoue to get up to speed. I'm sure they can work him in on some sub packages early on and Odenigbo can hold the fort in the mean time. Plus in obvious passing downs, Odenigbo can move back inside and help cover for the lack of pass rush that we have at DT. Plus, both Hunter and Ngakoue are only 25, so if they can agree to a long term deal with Ngakoue, then Vikings should have a nice tandem of pass rushers for at least the next 5-years. They just need to make sure that they finally do something about 3T in 2021.
He is a DE, he will be 100% for week 1.  " Hey Yannick go kill #12"

I agree that this trade wouldn't have happened without all the draft maneuvering and compensation picks. It's a lot easier to part with a 2nd rounder when you have a collection of 3rd and 4th rounders. Also, if the Vikings can't sign Ngakoue long term, then they can still get a 3rd round compensation pick for him in 2022. Not to mention that the 2021 draft will be extremely weird, then it makes sense to acquire a young & proven pass rusher. I wish we could have acquired him before camp, but the timing is why Jacksonville dropped their price.

You beat me to it...The Faithful in @PF is burning a little brighter today.

the other good point is how this takes a lot of heat off DH too. Those baby corners can maybe sleep a little easier now.

Im not as convinced at the loss of EG hurting as badly as the national pundits are making it to be either. I would much, much rather have a 26 year old with this upside.

Interesting how he never played over 75% of the snaps in Jax. He's going to have to get smarter/stouter vs the run. If I'm an NFL offense? I try running right at him.
