Quote: @FSUVike said:Three? Jayron Kearse... who was upset because he thought he deserved more playing time. But did he really deserve to start over Harris the past two season? Nope. Mac Alexander... I don't know for sure why he was upset, but I'm speculating it was because he thought he should be an outside CB instead of playing primarily in the slot. I liken his situation to Munnerlyn when he came here... if you remember Munnerlyn played on the outside for Carolina, but had to move inside when he came here. There were growing pains and it took a full season and the following off-season until he finally bought in. Same thing happened with Alexander, but the difference is that I think he is still young enough to get PAID and probably wants a shot outside. Stefon Diggs... obviously he wanted out and got his wish. I'm not sure what the reason is (the following is PURE speculation)... maybe after the Minnesota Miracle and signing a big contract, he thought the endorsement deals would be coming and they never did? Maybe his star would start shining brighter? Let's face it, he is sharing the spotlight with Thielen. Then in 2018, it was Thielen who tied an NFL record for most 100 yard games to start a season... meanwhile Diggs had a bunch of catches and a very good season, but it wasn't his name dominating the headlines in Minnesota. That seems to be the time when Diggs started having "issues" and trade speculation popped up during the off-season. So we have a backup safety that was sitting behind two All-Pro safeties that was unhappy... a young CB that didn't like playing in the slot... and a young, stud WR that wanted out. I guess I'm not ready to say Zim is the issue when leaders on the team like Harrison Smith, Rudy, Thielen, Everson, etc. all say they love him as a coach.

I don't care if it was three 7th Round guys on the PS. It's still 3 younger guys in a single offseason. It's legit to wonder if an aging, hard-ass coach who is not Belicheat and has a penchant for calling out players in the media is having trouble connecting with some of his youngest, brashest players. Guru admitted it's possible in another thread. Many great players are full of bluster and swagger. If Mike can't get along with them it limits the talent pool available to the team.

Quote: @FSUVike said:I think its a legitimate question. Its certainly debatable. But also, it might be a bit knee-jerk. Wins and losses will determine Zimmer's fate. These were mainly cap decisions and if they weren't in this bind, they might have made better offers to their own free agents. Hard to say for sure. Won't be a good look if the Vikes shit the bed and win 6 or 7 games this season. Big challenge upcoming with many young vets cut or leaving.

We're talking bout human personalities, human interaction...Complex, fuzzy, gray stuff.
I agree its debatable as Sticky points out. But there's also lots of younger players on this team who are doing quite well. Cook, Matson, Kendricks, Hunter, O'Neil etc.. Might we consider pointing a finger @ Gray and not Zimsu??? We also have the broader discussion as to how this org (not just Zimmer) has handled younger, mercurial receivers. I think there have been some cultural divides there too. But lets remind ourselves that Moss (unlike Diggs) did not want to be traded - that was all on the bastard Red McCombs and Gary (the ax) Woods. |
