Rap keep harping on tag and trade as if it was a foregone conclusion.
but why would they trade him without a viable replacement waiting in the wings?  maybe if they could get Winfield,  but then why would a team trade that pick for Harris when they could take Winfield and have him for more years at less money?
They were literally going to let him walk for nothing outside of a potential 2021 comp pick. With the cap space they're better off trying to at least explore the potential to get something when he was going to be one of the hottest FA commodities on the market.
but 11 for him isnt that much more than they would pay a street FA and Harris is ready to play day 1, what is he worth to a team in draft picks when they will still be on the hook for a high salary?  I dont  see a team offering more than that 3rd round compensatory pick when they still have to pay him and at his age... who knows how soon the wheels start to wobble?   He is only 2 years younger than Harrison Smith.   whats the market for good safeties on the back side of their careers?

The comp pick likely would have been a late 3rd though, right?
If the Vikings can get a 2nd+ then this is a very savvy move. But I think more likely we'll just keep him for a year and sign him longterm. It's the Viking way.

The one year deal on the tag is the issue. If they want to keep Harris long-term they will still need to pony up market rate which would have topped $13M per season. They don't have that right now. So although trading him would net you a pick and open up a hole, its better than simply allowing him to walk and needing to find a replacement as well.

Wait a minute, bud. He doesn't have even remotely the same number of snaps for his age that most guys that are that good have. Late bloomer that overcame injury concerns and played mostly on Special Teams and in reserve until the last year and a half.

Context matters. Harris simply doesn't have the wear and tear on him that his age would typically suggest. Saying he's on the backside of his career really isn't taking that into account, IMO.

i understand that,  but age is age and that high level of athleticism starts to drop around 30,  players like lineman and QBs that dont play with as much athleticism can get by longer,  but even reserve players their whole careers see their edge dulled by age.  Harris may not have the nagging aches and pains of playing full time in the NFL for the last 5 years or so,  but he has played the game his whole life and that adds up as well.   I am just saying that Harris is likely peaked and a slight drop off in the next couple years is to be expected,  so what is that guy worth in terms of a draft pick if you have to still pony up top of the market money?

At least a 3rd if not more. Safeties are one of the rare skill positions that tend to age well.

but will they?   as of now he is going to 29 this year and then starring down the barrel of the big 30 when this franchise tag plays out.  is he willing to play out this year with zero security going forward and then being a nearly 30 year old free agent in a league and at a position where that is kind of the point of decline?  or would he be willing to take a little less this year with some guarantees for the following 2-3 years that he may not see in 12 months?

he has options,  but I dont think its like the Vikings are without some leverage here as well.

well if we could get a 2nd for him... hell yeah!  I dont have the loftiest of expectations for this coming season so if we can lose some cap and get a premium pick to build for the future I am all for it.

Is there any chance on God's green earth... that the team would replace Smith... with Sendejo?  Smith can play in the box... and cover.  Sendejo can play in the box... and...?  Physically, Sendejo might be able to do *some* of the things that Smith could do.  But could the team consider him a cheap replacement for Smith?  With Ant back, maybe they feel like a second star at safety is a luxury they can't afford?
