We'll see where it goes from here. This was a surprise given they didn't expect to get Cousins done by the tag deadline. They could opt to trade Ant, but I think the safety market has evolved as well where $11M for Harris was quite palatable. He was set to make considerably more per year as a free agent.

I feel like this is probably the most likely scenario as well if I had to bet. But Zimmer loves Ant and I don't know what level of compensation it'd take to pull him away.

but why would they trade him without a viable replacement waiting in the wings?  maybe if they could get Winfield,  but then why would a team trade that pick for Harris when they could take Winfield and have him for more years at less money?

They were literally going to let him walk for nothing outside of a potential 2021 comp pick. With the cap space they're better off trying to at least explore the potential to get something when he was going to be one of the hottest FA commodities on the market.
