You wanna really stir shit up hire Wade Phillips, I would love that move personally. No clue on the offense but Mike McCoy needs a job. Just wild speculation
One thing is for certain if you hire Wade...Barr would be worth his contract...

How they use Barr gets a C grade from me most games. That dude should have 10-12 sacks per year.
Yup, they neuter his potential impact...after getting paid and that first series against Atlanta I thought they figured it out...nope...can you imagine Hunter and Barr on the edges?

What would our personnel look like in a base 3-4?

My vision would not be a 3-4 or 4-3, but a dynamic D that fluctuates game to game or even in game.  Dunno if it would work, but it sure would be fun to watch.
Wouldn't that be a lot on the players to remember and where they need to be? I guess it just seems like a lot of information and plays to have your defense remember 2 defenses. I do like the idea though for sure.

Dunno.  Could be why it hasn't ever worked.  But with those two defensive minds, they would have as good a chance as any.  Maybe change up who calls the plays at times without letting on.  Would be a huge tendency breaker.

I agree if it could work. That doesn't sound bad and sounds like it could be effective. I also see it as you may run into watered down versions of two different defenses as learning one type of defense is difficult enough. Again, just kinda playing devils advocate here.

It seems that a dominant 3T is vital to a 4-3, especially in Zimmer's scheme, and we've been lacking - and wishing for -  one since Kevin Williams was in his prime. Maybe those unicorns are too rare.
Odenigbo does seem like a 3-4 DE, not sure about Watts and Johnson. The scheme might suit Jalyn Holmes better. Who is at NT?

Johnson at NT...not the prototypical NT...we don't have classic ILBs either, but again, in an attacking style...

Never going to happen. Mike Zimmer has a Masters Degree in Bend but Don't Break with minors in fake blitz looks and mixing up bringing the heat when he has to. And he's ostensibly fighting for his job.

Switching schemes has less chance of happening than selling the farm to trade up for Joe B. or Tua.

It won't happen, but I'd love for him to hire someone that would convince him that he can have opponent-specific plans for QBs besides Brees, Rodgers, Wilson et al.

Natural pressure with the Front Four is his bread and butter. A 3T is crucial to make that work and there are some nice looking options in this Draft besides Kinlaw. If Rick can land one and a vet CB this should still be a Top 10 Defense.

The path to a Superbowl comes with improving the Offense though. Unless Zimmer has Sapp, Brooks, Barber, Lynch and that supporting cast or the Legion of Boom his style is never going to result in a Defense that carries a team to the trophy.

How is it that fans say with certainty  that Barr should have 10+ sacks a year and yet Zimmer   doesn't see it or use him in that way?

Non-rhetorical question.

If Barr is a a skilled pass rusher, why'd he resign for less money, so his talents and abilities  can be misused or even wasted?

Doesn't make sense to me.

In the SF it was apparent that both lines were not good enough to advance. No amount of scheme or play calling can overcome the lack of ability.

Leaving Patterson and Dennison to focus on their core competency makes more sense to me.

Honestly, re-signing him didn't make sense to me...I don't recall a hometown discount, but his reasons have been well documented...

When it became obvious to me Khalil Mack wouldn't fall to us, I watched 4-5 games of his at UCLA...watching him then it appeared clear to me that moving forward was better suited to his game than backwards...his 3 cone is superior to a lot of CBs...as with anything we fans talk about, it's speculative...but I think I have an informed opinion...

And likely it never will happen, but i recall Tomlin as a defensive guru and rising star winning a Super bowl letting Dick Lebeau run the defense. Dick was no Tampa 2 guru at all.

If we want to win it all before we all die of old age we need to innovate or create strength through a collection of minds as was mentioned earlier. This would be the latter obviously.  Zimmer is a good organizer and has the players  respect. He obviously loves to teach and call d on gameday, I just think we would  be stronger if Z gave those 2 loves up in exchange for overseeing the whole thing.

Because Barr is not Mack.  Yes he could pressure the QB, but can he play the run and hold up in all phases of the game on the DLine?  Doubt it.  He is a critical piece in the D.  Anyone remember the NO game?  How many big plays did Thomas have?   Guess why?  Barr was covering Thomas in the slot part of the time.  Name another LB that can do that?  name another team that has tried that.

Kamara was rather silent that game as well.  Wonder why?  Because our LBs rocked that game.  Just like SF's LBs were the difference last week against us.  Their coverage killed us and made Cousins hold the ball.
Even in the SF game, there is one play that stood out when talking about Barr.  SF was able to pound the ball and so the play action was working.  Barr and EK reacted to the PA, but Barr also read the pass and sprinted about 15 yards down the field to cover a WR/TE.  I remember it because he recovered so well, but the pass was perfect and the receiver made an incredible catch with Barr so close to knocking it away.

That is what he does, he covers lots of field with a large frame, speed and agility.  Same things that would make him a good pass rusher (burst, cutting ability) make him a serious weapon to take away so much of the field.

The problem with our D this year wasn't Barr.  It was no threat at 3T.
