Heinicke's lack of arm strength is alarming and it limits him big time. I don't see the love for the guy. All this gushing over a guy that was playing against absolute scrubs on that last drive.
No kidding...isn't there a current thread about former Vikings that were envisioned as rising stars here but have been waived early by other teams (Charles Johnson, Audie Cole)...?

For the strong Heinicke supporters: isn't even the most optimistic ceiling for his potential that he might turn into a decent backup QB, someone who could play a game or two if needed, like Shaun Hill or Case Keenum?? Or is there actually some belief that a couple years from now, Taylor Heinicke could be a starting NFL QB with the ability to lead a team to the playoffs and beyond?

affordable back up with upside.  i dont want a watered down pocket passer as a back up,  i want a guy that may not have the prototypical physical traits of a starter,  but has something to their game that will allow them to be competitive and maybe have a bit of an edge as a relative unknown coming into relief situations or a spot start.

we need a young developing guy to cheaply back up who ever wins out the starting battle.  both keenum and heineke are FA after this year,  but I think Heineke has a better game as a back up and will likely come at a lower price tag which will be key for a team thinking about franchise tagging 1 QB, and paying the other over 2 million,  it wouldnt make sense to pay another backup 2 million per year or more.

I think that's a realistic hope - that Heinicke could become a competent backup. IMO either Bridgewater or Bradford will be gone a year from now, so we will need someone as a backup to whoever remains.

Backup QBs like Keenum are relatively valuable, but only after they have proven they can handle coming in as a substitute for a few games - REAL GAMES. Heinicke has taken zero snaps in the NFL, so he is not going to be snatched away by other teams if we waive him to our PS.

Someone posted here yesterday that Heinicke isn't eligible for the practice squad. So is he or isn't he?

I wouldnt know why he wouldnt be,  he wasnt available last year and this is only his 3rd year.  IIRC they have to be active for the equivalent of 2 seasons (32 games) before they arent eligible for the PS.

Im not sure where the sources were getting their information, but whatever they thought they had didn't pan out.  Have a hard time thinking Teddy would be cleared to return to practice over a week ago, and still hasn't returned.  Maybe there is more going on behind the scenes that we know, with his contract and all or maybe the speculation was purely false info?  Either way, its starting to look like Teddy will head to the PUP to start the season.  Best case scenario for the team anyway, IMO.  Keep him under contract thru next season.
IMO this kind of "leak" that Bridgewater is about to return is probably coming from him or his agent or others in his camp. The intent is to create the impression that "he's almost ready", so that, when he argues that he is healthy enough to come off PUP before week 7, everyone thinks, "Yeah I thought he was ready to go a few weeks ago..."

Didn't a team grab Booty (hehe I said grab booty) off of our squad,.. and Thigpen?   Possibly not Booty but I'm sure Thigpen was.  Teams aren't looking for starters on practice squads... just backups and developmental guys.  I don't think anyone is saying he's a star... just that QBs with "Grit and Guts" are valued over "technical QBs with no passion" by some.

It's all fun and games until that guy ends up filling in for Christian Ponder in a playoff game; then we immediately pull the plug and pretend it never happened.

And playing WITH absolute scrubs as well. Everyone always forgets that part. It all evens out.

But the praise for Heinicke is not as much about what he's done this year, it's more about how he looked two years ago. Most impressed I've been with a rookie QB since Brad Johnson. Some don't see it I guess, but he's got something. And clearly I'm not alone in thinking that. Vikings gave a valuable roster spot to him rather than put him on the practice squad, exposing him to the wire. That says a lot about an undrafted kid from OD.

Preseason games make for QB 'stars', happens every season. 'Stars' that get cut or win #3 jobs. I'd MUCH rather have Keenum backing up Bradford. Its not even close, IMO. And if Heinicke can't win the backup job, why keep him? Find another project because his time will have passed with Minnesota if he isn't the #2 to start the season. Maybe he will be?

Minnesota is going to have to give serious consideration to keeping just 2 QBs (Bridgewater on PUP) to keep another guy on that super deep D-line talent.

I think Heineke has already shown that he is an actual QB,  Webb was an athlete that was asked to play the position.
