Agree, that they're a QB short.  I just don't think he's that QB.  But I'm no talent evaluator and could be completely wrong on him.

49ers twitter is just seething that their team might take Mac Jones at #3. LOL They could still do any number of things, but Jones is the most likely IMO.

I get how he had a great team around him. Just don't know how that makes you a bad QB. And the Cousins thing? You could do a lot worse than picking Cousins at #3. Of course, you hope for more, but the reality is that it's more likely you're getting Daniel Jones or Haskins or Darnold or Mariota or Winston or Wentz or Goff. And every team that picked those guys would love to have Cousins at QB right now.

I think a lot of people have the 49ers goals a little messed up. For them they don't need a high upside superstar. They need consistency and health. Mac Jones isn't the high upside option in this draft but he is a good team guy, can make all the throws, and thus far has shown durability. Yes, he is Kirk Cousins/Eli Manning but the fact is that they'll have him on a rookie contract for 4 years. That in and of itself allows them to keep all of their defensive stars and play in FA. Its a lot to give up but with a healthy QB who ends up in the top 15 of the league they could go on a SB run.

IT will be Lance. You dont trade up to 3 unless you KNOW you will get your guy. Lance is the ONLY guy guaranteed to be there at 3.

I'm not even sure what that means. You don't trade up a month before the draft for "your guy." You trade up to three because you've identified three players you'd be very happy with, regardless of which one remains. Since we know it's a QB, it's fairly obvious two are Lawrence and Wilson. So the question is...who's the 3rd? Sure, it could be Lance. Could also be Fields. But it could also be Jones. If I were putting money on it, I'd bet on Jones. 

This. Weirdly good things could happen at this #3 spot. They for sure love their QB board at the very least for the Top 3, but what if some dumb GM takes a player outside a QB at #2? Or a team trades up to the #2 spot for a non-QB? I mean, crazy stuff has happened. Not probably, but not impossible either.

Won't matter to the 49ers. They'll just have two QBs to choose from instead of one. But it's so expensive to move up, I can't imagine a team moving to the top of the draft for anyone but Wilson or Lawrence. 

Agree, I am sold on Wilson bigtime.  But we just don't have the capital to move past the 5th or 6th pick without giving up the farm.  Plus I don't think Spelly is looking at QB beyond the second tier guys like Mond, Mills, and maybe even Newman (Georgia) who seems to be a forgotten player.  Also, Trask might fall way down???

It leads to the need, and sometimes the desperation, of trying to find ‘that guy.’" The success rate for highly-drafted quarterbacks has been a disaster of late: None of the 15 quarterbacks picked in the top-10 from 2009 to 2016 are on their original teams. King quoted a "middle-aged coach whose team is in the market to draft a quarterback" this year who said Trevor Lawrence is clearly the No. 1 pick, but that he has three receivers, a tight end, and two offensive tackles ahead of the next signal caller. NFL teams' thirst for franchise quarterbacks is understandable, and will likely normalize desperate QB picks among the first ten picks in many drafts to come.

I would jump on Fields if he fell to 14 but not Lance.  Not enough game time for me and they had him run first, then drop back and if no open WR then run again.  I know running QB's are in-vogue right now but Lance is not built like Lamar Jackson.  He is built more like Daunte and we all know how his career ended on a running play.  Bigger then many LB's and it does not matter in the open field with these assassin expert secondaries with much smaller guys, they will take you out.  I think Lamar is going to learn to pass more and run less very soon.  I hope it is not the hard way.

I keep seeing the 2009-2016 QB stat and while interesting, it’s hardly a death knell against the Draft A QB Early strategy. 

In 2009 teams were running bounties and the overtime rules hadn’t been updated yet. A LOT has changed since then and a lot of very promising QBs have been drafted in 2017-2020. 

The Vikings aren’t really in position to get one this year and I’m at peace with that reality but for a team like Atlanta who is sitting at #4 I’d absolutely be taking a looooooong look at drafting a QB. 

Like Guru said you don’t need a hall of famer in this scenario. It’s can you get league-average play for a fraction of the price of Matt Ryan? If the answer is yes then you probably do it and also look to trade Julio before 2022 too. That’s about $50M in salary they’d net by shedding their aging QB/WR tandem.

To me that makes more sense than Kyle Pitts IF they think the rookie can be league-average or better.

Brooks is calling Pitts the best player in the draft. I watched enough Gator football to realize he's pretty much a unicorn. I think with the slightest bit of imagination, you can give DCs nightmares. He's a field tilter.
