Sounds like the question is starting to grow louder, as it should IMO.  The author brings up some other good points as well regarding players besides Sloter.  And I say all of this as a big Mike Zimmer fan, but some of his seemingly stubborn favoritism is starting to get a little old.

Does Performance Matter to Mike Zimmer? We hear a lot about creating competition in the off-season and training camp, and the importance of performing well - but what does it matter if no changes are made?
Was just checking to see if anyone else had posted that article.  Great read.

GREAT read! I like Zimmer but his seemingly hands-off approach to the offense is getting really old. I love having a great defense but there's 2 other facets of the game that we've been average or worse in for much of Zim's tenure.
There were multiple reports about the team last year (after the season was over of course) that guy's might not have had the same mindset or hungriness that they had the year before. A true lack of competition would certainly explain some of that.
I still believe in Zimmer and the roster is talented. Let's see it on the field this year. All 3 phases.

Yes Sloter has looked good but what all the Sloter for QB proponents are forgetting is the game plan.  Its a vanilla offensive game plan.  We fans dont get to see how he looks in practice when they are diving deep into the play book.  I think thats what Zim is referring to when he says there is more to being a QB.  Can he recognize a defense, can he make the right audibles and get guys in the right place after he makes that call ?  He can look awesome against opponents 2s and 3s playing a vanilla defense but that doesnt mean squat if he sucks when the real play book gets pulled out.

Mannion's bio says has a nice personality--enough said.
I guess he's relegated to the stag line at the prom then....

mannion looks like crap against 2s and 3s with a vanilla game plan. At least Sloter has dominated when he has played. all you can do is produce at the level you are put in against. The same guys Mannion is facing.

The Sloter love fest is amazing.  It reminds me of Taylor Heinicke to a degree.
The dude was extremely raw coming out of college having thrown only 320 passes.
He did OK in the meaningless end of preseason game and when Denver let him go the Vikings paid him more than anyone else.  But it was still less than a minimum contract for NFL players.
And he sat on the PS for 11 days.  The narrative that the Vikings beat other teams is silly.  They could have signed him to their 53 man roster in those 11 days.
He has already been the #2 QB during regular season games when Bradford got hurt and Teddy was still on the PUP.
Last year he could not keep that spot.  Why not?
If meaningless preseason games vs players who will be cut and who are not running anything complicated on defense is all it took to impress the coach then he would be back at the #2 spot.
He faces a tough defense every day in practice and I would venture a guess they have thrown some things at him.  Zimmer has seen this and it is my guess that this is why Zimmer is not ready to crown his arse.
It really is a waste of time.
If Cousins goes down for any length of time, then guess what?  At worst, Sloter will be in that #2 spot that many a Vikings fan is complaining about.

I love that take. So how do you account for Cousins and Mannion's poor performance?

Agreed. Its preseason and I don't get how fans seem to forget that.

Maybe others are asking for him to be QB2. I am not. I am wondering why it's so hard to give him a look (meaningful look) with the 2's. A few days ago a vikings receiver who was drafted in the 7th round and has been playing primary with the 3rd and 4th string and as they say "meaningless preseason games against players who will be cut and who are not running anything complicated..." has been elevated to practice with the starting team (at least that's what we gather) yet it is wrong for some to ask (and should I add seems offending to some) why Solter who has been throwing passes to O. Johnson can't get a look with the second string in what you guys call meaningless preseason games. Note I did not say elevated to QB 2. The more this conversation goes on the more perplexing the reasons given why Sloter can't play with the 2s become. No one is is saying he is the saviour or a legit QB 2. All I am asking is, is it that hard to give him a look with the 2s? I know the call is Zim's and and all we all can do here is speculate but we can at least wonder.

Yes, the WR got elevated for playing against the 3rd and 4th string, but part of that is how he is doing in practice as well. We olny see the games on TV, the coaches see Sloter in practice and meetings and don't think he's ready....I'll trust them over people here that were just as high on Ponder in preseason.......

I think we are on same page. The WR got elevated to practice with the starters but Sloter can't get a series with the 2s in a preseason game? Seriously what does "ready" mean? He is playing very well with the 3-4th string! Actually, some of those players play with the second string if we want to be picky. It is starting to feel  like playing well at practice trumps playing well in games. I would think it's a mixture of both with some degree of flexibility.
At the very least he has consistently demonstrated that he is good with the 3-4th string. So why not give him a higher challange even if for  a few series? Arent we all for challenging each other and improving the roster? Again all I am asking is a few series.
