Going to have to look-up when Diggs' contract is up...Not an slam-dunk re-sign, least not at huge guaranteed $$$
Under contract through 2018. Spielman likes to get core players signed in the summer before their last year, so they never sniff free agency, so they may be talking next summer. Hunter, Kendricks, and Barr are at the same stage. Also need to decide whether to give Wayne's the 5th-year option next spring...oh, and figure out the QB thing, too...
Back to Diggs, let's see what Floyd does with this opportunity, too.

Diggs is a LOCK to get a second contract with the Vikings... and Michael Floyd will have no impact on that decision @ Jor-El.

i woudnt be so sure on the word "lock", I am sure he will get offered a contract, but it wouldnt be smart to pay him like a top receiver (which he is when healthy) when he has yet to really show any durability at all. I have a feeling that him and his agent will be looking for game changer type money, but I wouldnt go there with him unless there were some serious health clauses built into the deal. Also if FLoyd plays like the beast he can be, and wants to stay in Minny, it will be much easier for Rick to stand his gound on the Diggs contract demands so in a way Floyd may end up having some bearing on the discussions.
our 2 rookies might get a chance to come into the discussion as well if Diggs is out for a few weeks. it would be a great time to work one or both of them into the rotation. especially if they are trying to move JW before the trade deadline.

Fast starter as you can see with 2017 stats-to-date.
So far Diggs has been the consummatt promise of production, excitement and moxie on the field derailed with injuries. Very Robert Smith like. Just waiting for that one break-out year. Still hoping it can be 2017:
2015: GS =9, 52/720/4 tds
2016: GS = 11, 84/903/3 td's
2017: GS = 5, 23/395/4 td's
Is Diggs going to get mumps next?

It seems like "we" (the collective we as fans) have this same argument every time a good player on the Vikings is coming to the end of his rookie deal. At some point you need to pay your playmakers...
I didn't say anything about paying him top money, but I bet the Vikings will give him a competitive offer and it will likely exceed the deal they gave Thielen on a per year average. He's a game changing talent just entering his prime... his injury history will certainly affect his guaranteed money and how much incentives are built into his contract... but the Vikings would be foolish not to re-sign him. And they WILL re-sign him, barring a career ending injury this season. It's a LOCK, Jimmy.
Coley and Adams are not in the same stratosphere as Diggs so let's end that conversation right now... that's wishful fan thinking.

i never said you mentioned top dollar, i am assuming that Diggs agent will be looking that way and will at least want to test the market. foolish would be to try and match teams desperate for a receiver and are willing to throw top money at him in hopes of him suddenly finding durability. he is only a game changer when he is healthy and in the games, his current status and past performance says that he is that type of player for about 1/3 to 1/2 the games at the most. its really hard to lock up decent cap space in a guy that is only producing at that frequency. we dont need all world, we need decent consistent performance that can be counted on at a much higher rate. I love the kid when he is healthy, but at this point its starting to be damn tough to count on him and that is why its damn tough to see him as a lock for a second deal with us... not that we wont offer, just that we wont offer enough.
his current contract makes him a huge value even with his frequent absence from the lineup. if he is making more than Theilen and only playing half the games or so at a relatively healthy level then his value is gone and he then becomes a salary cap liability.

Yup...going back to Maryland...
To be fair, his sophomore year ended w/ a broken leg, & his junior year ended w/ a lacerated kidney. Not sure what he could have done to avoid those...

I have no doubt they will make a competitive offer, but the number of player decisions that will need to be made after 2017 will dwarf any recent year. There are a lot of moving parts. As for my comment about Floyd, I should elaborate that I think the Vikings will (or can) probably retain only one of them next year. But Diggs is definitely going to get a lot of consideration, also because he was our own draft pick - in fact, he's the star (or only) product of all those 5th-7th round picks Spielman loves to collect.

There's a reason he was a fifth-round pick, you know. Staying healthy has been a problem for him for years.
I would say Diggs fell to the 5th round mostly because his true ability (he was a 5-star recruit) was disguised by a Maryland offense with a series of terrible, freshman QBs. Once he did get some consistency at QB, he got hurt. He had a lacerated kidney and a broken fibula, not the kind of recurring, soft tissue things we're seeing now. In either case, injuries or no, I'll take a Stefon Diggs in the 5th round every year, please.
