More importantly,  how much cap space did it open up.
none if its all gaurented correct?
It's not fully guaranteed.

I wonder if this means that Spielman and Zimmer will get short-term extensions to sync up with Cousins deal?
I had a million scenarios in my head on where RS/MZ extensions fit in with the QB's...I do think this means they're going to keep that band together another couple seasons.

Now they need to have an eye towards the future @ QB. How much do they value the upside of Hurts???

This is the year for Minnesota to take a swing at a raw guy with huge upside that can sit for a few years. Anywhere in round 2-5.
I agree,  but its gonna Hurts Rick alot to spend that third round comp pick on a QB when he could easily trade if for a 5th and 2-7ths.

C+ is how I feel. Kirk's really good. And I'm glad we have a good QB. But greedy me wants more, and I was excited by the remote possibility of shaking things up. Instead, this signals to me it will be status quo for a few more seasons.
I feel like based on the contract structure and lack of a no trade clause I'd give the deal something between a B & B+. Cousins did not reset the QB market, its saves the Vikings $10M in cap space this off-season and gets them back to the $31M number when the cap is expected to rise by $20+M. If you compare the deal and market in 2018 when he signed his deal, this is much much better for the Vikings.

If spotrac has it right, we essentially lowered Cousins cap hit this season by 10 million (good), but locked ourselves into him for next season as well.  If his dead money is only 10 million in 2022, that will allow us to work out another extension to lower his cap hit or cut bait if we want.  The cap is projected to increase quite a bit in 2021 and 2022...

This seems like a good deal on the surface.

I wish you were correct, but I just read that his 2022 salary is guaranteed on the 3rd league day of 2021. So we'd basically have to cut him after THIS season (not the following one, unfortunately), or extend him further at some point, to alter that 2022 number. And if we cut him after this season, his 2021 cap hit is $31M. Ouch. Again, this is all if I'm understanding this all correctly.
The bottom line I see is that Kirk Cousins is our starting QB for the next 3 seasons, guaranteed. Barring a catastrophic collapse and total overhaul that would probably involve us sending out draft picks just to move him.
I'm not super mad about this, but I wish I felt happier about it than I do.
We could cut him anytime after the 2021 season and before the "whatever" day of the league year in 2022 and only take 10 million in dead money.  We won't let him play in 2022 with a 45 million cap hit...  he'll either get another extension to lower that number or we'll cut him.  This extension basically ensures he will be a Viking for this season and next season.  After that, we'll see what happens.

The base salary guarantees basically lock him in for the 3 years unless they can find a trade partner. His 2022 guarantees on the 3rd day of the 2021 league year and on that day the Vikings would be on the hook for $41M in dead money.

so I'm reading that it adds 2 years with 61 million of the 63 million guaranteed.

2 questions:

So if it lowers the cap hit this year 10 million we have to assume that 10 million will be paid out over then next 2 years right?  so if he is looking at a 32 million average over the next 3 years can we assume that his hit next year will be over 35 million, closer to 37 to 40?

also,  if this year was already guaranteed,  and his new deal has 61 of 63 guaranteed,   he is basically guaranteed his money for the next 3 years,  so essentially another fully guaranteed deal?

or am I missing some details?
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/minnesota-vikings/kirk-cousins-9915/

That should help answer your questions...I had to look it up to understand
its not as bad as I was anticipating,  but that 45 milllion for 2022 is guaranteed against injury so we better freaking pray that he doesnt get a major injury or we will be screwed.

Now let's go get that OL help to keep him upright.

Aaaaaaah, I thought his 2022 was guaranteed on the 3rd day of the 2022 league year.  Thanks for pointing that out.

I feel like it was a political move so the media stops harping on his "fully guaranteed deal" lol. Although this deal by structure is... wait for it... fully guaranteed.

Well, they could trade him after this season and save 10 mil on cap for 2021.  The other team would have him for 21 mil and 35 mil.

I think they could even trade him after 2022 becomes fully guaranteed too.

The other team would be on the hook.

They at the very least gave themselves options and provided Cousins with a virtual "fully guaranteed deal".

They *could* trade him, but if he's playing up to his contract then they won't. And if he's not playing up to his contract then they can't (unless they wanna do an Osweiler deal where we pay a team to take him). Barring injury, there's a 99% chance that Kirk's our QB for the next 3 years. I'm still coming to terms with this too, ha.

Yeah, that's fair.
But the counterpoint would be Kirk no longer has the "new team, new environment" upside that he had when we first signed him. So we shouldn't have to pay for that, and we didn't.
The deal itself is fine. I'm not mad at all about it. I just personally was anxious to see what THIS team would look like with a young, cost-controlled QB with upside. That's off the table now and I'm coming to grips with it.
