It's very simple. The coaches are trying to win NOW. They don't care about contracts. If they think he can help them by being an occasional DE/LB then great. Go for it.

so...if he has this in his game... why not last year? why didnt he line up at DE until now? i am sure this isnt a new idea considering many thought that was the plan when he was drafted. what has changed now?

I don't know. Maybe they wanted him to learn and have the LB position in-grained in his head before adding a new position to learn?

That's just it. Leave the Xs and Os to Zimmer. Leave the 1s and 0s to Rick and Breezy. Now, Rick might be thinking "Damn, Zimm, you're going to make my job harder," but isn't that what we all want? Production? Sacks? Wins? The Lombardi? And what if Barr is a revelation on the line? NFL sack leader? I'm sure Rick will take that over the contract headache. As he always says, this is a good problem to have.

ok... so why confuse him in an "all in" year if he is really that slow of a learner?
its really not that big of a deal, it just seems odd to me with the timing of it all, especially considering we really dont have anybody to take his LB position that is even close to his ability.... personally if this is way to get Griff some off time, i would much rather see one of the youngsters getting those reps as they are the future of the position and not somebody that may not be here next year or be available in any situation. the rotation has to be as much about developing new talent as it is about getting the starters some breaks throughout the season IMO.

Maybe they just think he is ready? No idea but I trust these coaches to be trying things out they think will help the team. We may not even see him play DE at all. It was just OTA's after all.

maybe they are, i just think in the big picture.. maybe there could have been a better plan. maybe I am completely off. all i said was i found the timing strange.

He isn't a slow learner. He started as a raw rookie at a rather difficult spot.
I think all LBs should take a few reps with the D-line. Learn how to blitz more effectively rather than be blocking dummies like in the frazier days.

Barr can rush the quarterback from the DE position or drop back in coverage. He's been doing that all along. the only difference is that on some plays he will start with his hand in the dirt. Really no big significance as far as I can see.
That's kinda how I see it...position flexibility when called upon, based on the situation.

it was a joke, gerber suggested the reason they waited until his last year was they wanted to make sure he knew his position.... started as a rookie, a few pro bowls... yeah, i am sure his learning ability is just fine. Griffen said in an interview that Barr will be lining up at DE the way it sounds... to me (as I have said a couple times) the timing of it is strange.
