The part I don’t really understand is how everything all
plays out in terms of matching the contract.
Do you have to match it exactly or can structure it slightly
differently.  Can some team poison pill
the other team or is that off the table?
Can you offer Jackson $80M base salary in year one or something that
most teams would find hard to match?  How
much time does Baltimore have to figure things out?  How much time do other teams have to negotiate
a contract?  Like if you sign him
tomorrow, can Baltimore wait until after the draft to let you know if they’re
matching?  Can they wait until 5 minutes
before the draft so you don’t know if you have your 1st round pick
for this year or not?
The league made poison pills illegal after the Hutch/Burleson contracts.
How is the poison pill defined?

I could see a team offering huge money in year one to screw Baltimore. I could also see that blowing up if say its a 5 year deal with $100m in year 1 and $35m a year for 2-5. But Lamar holding out when $35/yr isn’t enough in year 5.

Quote:(iii) Notwithstanding Subsections (i) and (ii) above, no Offer Sheet may contain a Principal Term that would create rights or obligations for the Old Club that differ
in any way (including but not limited to the amount of compensation that would be paid,
the circumstances in which compensation would be guaranteed, or the circumstances in
which other contractual rights would or would not vest) from the rights or obligations that
such Principal Term would create for the Club extending the Offer Sheet (i.e., no “poison
pills”).

The Vikings put the poison pill clause in Hutchinson's contract that made it fully guaranteed if he wasn't the highest-paid offensive lineman on the team. Hutchinson's 7-year, $49 million contract was smaller than Jones' deal. Therefore, there was no way for them to work around it

Just reading on Fanside that Detroit is in a great position to get Lamar and still pick 6th, give up the 18th this year and if they are as competitive or better a mid 20 first they next.  They also have quite a bit of cap room to work with already, 10th most.

I know, and I laughed at the thought of Detroit being a rivalry.  Yeah and all the Dan Campbell knee biter jokes, I would hate that flavor of crow.

Detroit is dynamic on offense, with decent playmakers. Goff spreads it around smartly. Campbell has them playing hard. But we've all seen what happens to some teams year to year: up and coming one year, shit the next and vice versa. Might happen to Minnesota as well.
