Gary Kubiak plans to retire as Vikings offensive coordinator
#31
Looking forward to another year of Mediocre Mike at the helm, does it really matter which guys he brings in to assist?  They all eventually fail in one way or another because the guy at the top is the real failure.  Not a HC, just a DC in over his head.  Way over.

Zimmer is responsible for the coaching staff.  6 OC's coming into year 8 = not good.  Common denominator anyone?  I won't bring up ST's coaches.

The ' best' option to maintain continuity is to promote Rick Dennison to OC. He was also the OC for Kubiak in Denver so he has been down this road before. The 'problem' with that is he was also the OC for the Bills when Josh Allen struggled and his offense ranked 29th. You could also argue that he was one of the guys who 'identified' Allen as the QB for the Bills.
Dennison is probably the most likely. He's the most experienced, having been a coordinator for about 6 or 7 seasons in various places with various results. But he's also 62, just two years younger than Mike Zimmer. Young Kubiak is 33.

Both would likely keep the same staff and offense so either one is fine with me, but I'd probably go with the kid.

Another factor is that Zimmer seems to need coordinators who he sees as peers, so he loves to hire former HCs. When he does not have someone like that, he'll meddle with the offense and criticize (blame) the coordinator in press conferences.

Vikings offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak announces his retirementThe play caller was expected to step down after two years with the Vikings.Vikings offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak announced his retirement on Thursday after two seasons with the team.
Kubiak, who had been an offensive adviser to coach Mike Zimmer during the 2019 season, replaced Kevin Stefanski as offensive coordinator a year ago.
The 59-year-old Kubiak directed an offense that finished fourth in total yards and 11th in scoring, but he was widely expected to retire, saying after the Vikings season ended that "I'm kind of a year-to-year guy at this stage of my life, I think, as a football coach."
Kubiak has been part of four Super Bowl-winning staffs and was head coach for the champion Broncos in the 2015 season. He first retired as Denver head coach after the 2016 season, and was itching to get back on a coaching staff by the time Stefanski discussed working with him before 2019.
The Vikings are now looking for their sixth coordinator in as many years.
Even with another coaching disruption, Zimmer has emphasized continuity of scheme for quarterback Kirk Cousins and the offense.
This year, Cousins threw a career-high 35 touchdown passes while Justin Jefferson set a Super Bowl-era rookie record for receiving yards (1,400) and Dalvin Cook finished second in the NFL with 1,557 rushing yards.
Were the Vikings to replace Kubiak with an internal hire, quarterbacks coach Klint Kubiak, Gary's son, could be a strong option.
In other news, The Wilfs are expected to honor Kubiak this Fall as he will be placed into The Vikings ROH as the longest-lasting Vikings OC during the Mike Zimmer era.

That sucks. I was kind of hoping he'd at least stick around as a consultant as he did his first year here.

I was hoping with every day without official announcement was a good thing.

There are a couple obvious choices to take his place. I'll stick with all the former HCs of Lynn and Jackson.

Its funny how the best playcallers usually have the best players. I'm sure it'll be fine. Maybe we pass a little more but 35 passing TDs and 4200+ yards thru the air seemed more than fine in this 'run heavy' offense I keep hearing about.

Trust me, it ain't the OC I'm going to be worried about, its the defense.
I pointed this out in another thread, oddly enough it went ignored.  2.8 points per game separated the Vikings offense from KC. 3.2 points per game between Vikings and Saints/Bucs. So just over a field goal a game difference from being a top 3 offense.  I feel like if the offense was more passing heavy and flashy,  but scored the exact same points the complaints wouldn't be so strong.
