Birk took three years? i didnt remember that at all.
During his first two seasons with the Vikings, he appeared in 22 games as a backup offensive lineman. In 2000, he took over the starting center position for the Vikings, starting all 16 games and was named to his first Pro Bowl team. Birk started every game for the Vikings at center from 2000-2003.

In fairness we had a pretty good guy ahead of him at the time... wasnt it Jeff Christy that kept Birk on the bench more than Birk not being ready to play? Birk did the same to Sully IIRC.

@ TBro said: It may be surprising that I have Nick Easton being cut, but there are some ‘reading of tea-leaves’ behind it.
Dude, those aren't "tea" leaves.
As Common would say, "He may be on something, or onto something." I think he is an average guard on his best day. If some of the younger players make a step up this year, we could cut him with nothing counting against the cap. I agree that I think it's unlikely, but it will be interesting to see what happens. If they move Remmers to LG in Training Camp, I think it's good indication Easton will be gone.
Man, I don't see that at all. Last year was just Easton's 3rd season. Matt Birk, another Harvard guy, didn't start a single game until his 3rd season. So, a team who needed a guard in the draft, missed on all of them until the 6th round, then releases its starting left guard and backup center whom they've been developing for 2 years? A player who barely lost the center competition? Remember, we didn't even know who won that until opening day.
Yeah, safe to say, I would be pretty shocked by that.
Easton plays well in space, he is a valuable asset on the line and will keep getting better. Need to get over the fact he looks like an aging frat boy more than an NFL player, but as BRob said, at the end of the day, he is in the NFL.

Rick had mentioned in his recent post-draft interview with PA how impressed they are with Aviante Collins.
I stumbled across this film session on you tube when he was used in the Jumbo package against the Bears last season.
I like what I see. I think he has much better upside over Hill if Remmers moves to RG.
If there is a young tackle that loses out this camp, my guess is it would be Hill that goes. I like Collins a lot more than Hill and with O'Neill being drafted they won't keep 3 backup tackles.

I'd disagree since Hill's ability to swing over to LT is invaluable when O'Neill may or may not be ready. If you wanted to be more formal and set up a depth chart across the line for the time being it probably would be:
LT: Reiff, O'Neill
LG: Easton, Andrews, Cossett, Gonzalez
C: Elflein, Edison
RG: Remmers, Compton, Isidora
RT: Hill, Collins, Norton, Joseph, Lang
Assuming that they keep 9 again the easiest way to look at the depth chart is to break each positional group into tiers. It really shows you how far a single player would need to move up to really challenge for a roster spot.
Tier 1 (near locks) -
Reiff, Easton, Elflein, Remmers, O'Neill
Tier 2 (should make the roster) -
Hill
Tier 3 (on the line) -
Compton, Isidora, Collins
Tier 4 (competing) -
Andrews, Cossett, Edison
Tier 5 (longshots) -
Gonzalez, Norton, Joseph, Lang
So Hill is pretty safe and Collins had a good shot to make the roster since he'd be competing to be the best 3 out of 6 (tiers 3/4). He also is one of the only OT's in that grouping which gives him a significant advantage.

What if they don't move Remmers to RG?
Collins played quite a bit in the Jumbo last year. If they keep 2 backup tackles and 2 backup guard/center combos I see the backups as O'Neill and Collins. Hill has a shot so it could be O'Neill and Hill with Collins cut. I just have a hard time seeing Collins go. Hill not as much. I think Collins can play both LT and RT too.
Andrews is a lock at a backup spot since they signed him for DeFlippo. Isidora is a lock to me at RG to start the year. So the second backup guard/center will be ?? Compton or Cossett?
Just my guess at this point.

We'll have to ultimately see what happens during OTA's and Mini Camp before we have a good feeling where Remmer's lines up. Based on how they've approached the O-line this off-season there are some hints that he'll be bumped inside until someone else along the interior line can show something. Also you need to look back at the end of last season. They could have slid Isidora in a OG but believed messing with two pieces Remmers/Hill would be the best combination.
They also didn't sign Andrews strictly for DeFilippo. They tried to sign him off the Philadelphia PS last season and finally got the chance to once PS players can sign futures deals with any team.
Yeah - it's all fun guess work for now

Andrews looks like a pretty solid prospect. 6-2, 311. Has a 4.93 forty on his resume. Here is an article about Andrews development couple years ago...
