Any More Chanting for Teddy??
#21
today was exactly why teddy needs to get in a game if we wrap it up. he needs live game action to knock the rust off just in case he is called upon if needed.

I think we've seen worse from Case.  It was hardly a good situation where he was allowed to throw.  TEddy was amped up and put to much mustard on the ball.

Remember case opened the last game with a pick,   hardly wOrth trying to compare limited opportunities.

But if it helps your agenda...run with it.  This was good for the team to get the gitters out of ted.
Exactly. It's completely natural for a player to be nervous/excited after coming back from a serious injury, so him making some mistakes is to be expected. The good thing is that he had a chance to settle his nerves and we saw that he is still able to move around the pocket and protect himself.

As for the two passes, I agree that he put too much mustard on them. Both were thrown hard and a bit high, though I think Floyd should have been able to catch the pass on 3rd down. Would have loved to see him get more snaps today, but hopefully, he'll get some extended time against the Bears, so that we can get a better idea of where he actually is both for deciding on next year and having him ready if anything happens to Case.

What i think - Case is the one built for this team in this year.  Teddy looked fine - he hung in the pocket and I counted that he read 3 receiver progressions on the first throw.  He did not look panicky.

That said, Case is a "gamer", and Teddy, a "nice guy".   Teddy still has not proven to be consistent with the deep ball, and while mobile, Case continues to look downfield and make plays on the run.

I never thought I'd say it, but I'd sign Case over Teddy, based purely on what I've seen this year.  I know Teddy is younger, has loads of talent, but I'd like to win now, and Case sure seems like a more fiery leader.

You can't grade the performance on a slew of handoffs, two passes, and kneeling the ball three times. There is always going to be a difference between practice and a real game. Coming off the bench cold turkey like that isn't always the easiest either.

He looked anxious in the pocket, but we'd have to see him more before you could even begin to consider if it was nerves, a fear of being hit, or just a fluke.

Case haD a full game as a throw away against the Steelers,   but Ted is suposed to be rated on two throws on third down after running It for shit on the first two downs.

Ok.
Getting the first team reps is the key.  Case got almost none before the Steeler game and Teddy got almost none before this game.  Can't judge Bridgewater on this one.  What we did get, was him in a game before the playoffs.  That is huge.  How'd you like his performance in a playoff game if it was his first time taking live game snaps in January.  Here, he knocked off nerves, not rust - he is not rusty.  He's had lots of practice the last 8 weeks.  The key is whether he can perform on gameday if he is really needed.

Today did not help calm any fears about that possibility, but it is one more step.  Don't forget, if the Vikings get to the NFC Championship game or Super Bowl, Sam Bradford would also be available to play.

Call it rust, or say the INT was not his fault because it was deflected. But I saw weak, sidearm throws. Certainly no "it factor". Reminded me of his modest production in 14 and 15.

But I want to hear what others thought.
Too early to say anything but way to go kid, nice job getting back on the field. Amazing resilience and a hell of a story.

I dont want another Randall Cunningham situation, and I think the Vikings today are smarter organizationally than they were under McCombs era. That said, they need to keep Keenum for at least another year and Shurmur too.

We are no closer on determining where Teddy is at after this brief cameo, and the unfortunate part is that we probably won't have the luxury of playing him in the next two games unless they really get out of hand. That rarely happens vs. the Packers and Bears. The Packers will be looking at next week's game as their Super Bowl and you know that would like nothing better than to ensure we don't capture the number 1 overall seed in the NFC.

I'm still not sure what to think of Case. He has done a good job, but what percentage of the Vikings success is him, what percentage is Shurmur, and what percentage is the supporting cast? Basically, could we put any decent QB with certain traits in that situation and expect similar results or are there things that Case does, which separate him? His mobility and ability to avoid sacks is a definite positive. I think that his accuracy, failure to go through progressions/stare down receivers, and holding onto the ball too long are negative. Then you have traits like not being afraid to make tight window throws/trusting your playmakers. That's worked this year, but is that because of guys like Thielen, Diggs, & Rudolph making tremendous plays and/or has he had a certain amount of luck with the ball bouncing the right way? Also, when he does make mistakes the D has generally been good enough to limit the damage.

It's this weird case where the offense has been better and they are putting up points, but I seldom feel like the offense is really playing well. I think Keenum is playing well enough and the D is good enough that they could win it all this year, but when you talk about extending Case past this season, that is where I get more hesitant. I think the window to do that at a reasonable contract level has passed and if he gets into FA, then you are competing with teams desperate for a QB like the Bills and Jets who might throw a stupid amount of money his way. If we could get him for a midlevel QB contract and still afford to keep Teddy or another good QB to compete/backup, then I would be fine with that. But if we are talking about giving him top 10-15 QB money, then I hesitate a lot more at that point.
