in dejos case he just didnt have the reach, he wasnt trying to hit it up or down, it was all he could do to get his fingers on the ball. I agree he was just trying to deflect it any way he could. However, if you watch the replay both Rhodes and Smith were right there so if the ball was tipped just a little differently it could have been a pick.
